Rigid Fork Conversion

Hey /n/ how’s it going?
Last year I picked up a Windsor Cliff 4900

It was $100 and I added a nice rear rack for $50. Great budget winter bike. I want to get rid of the front shock and convert it to rigid. I’m hoping there could be some weight loss and front fork mounting options. Make this winter riding even better.

I was thinking about finding a surly fork online and using that but I’m at a loss and confused about the conversion. It’s a 26 inch disc brake fork.

What should I be looking for in size? Also I know there is two different types of disc brakes (maybe more)...
Has anyone gone through this before or know of a good resource for it?

I have, but honestly it's not that bad! I live in Chicago US so it's flat and this thing zips. Thinking about getting spiked tires for the winter this year.

Any recommendations on street tires? I have Schwalbe on one bike I really love with zero issues. Gator Skins on another bikes and really love those.

that means it has a longer axle to crown measurement than a rigid fork typically would, to compensate for the suspension fork sitting the front end higher to give room to bob up and down. You can use a non suspension corrected fork but it will lower the front end of the bike and make it handle snappier. Or you could use a 100mm or higher corrected fork and it will raise the front end and make it lazier and give you a low rider look. It's also not a measurement that is exactly standard either because geometries differ.

I wouldn't worry about the kind of disc tabs. I think all the stuff you look at will be standard and if you have to change your brake caliper that's not a huge deal probably a good upgrade route anyway.
so it's 1 1/8 steerer, which almost all of them will be.
26" wheels. This is not vital with discs but is a more straightforward way of achieving the geometary you want. But you could use a 29er or 27.5 infact that might be a way of using a non suspension corrected fork. Compare the axle to crown.
length of steerer is irellevant they'll all be long enough unless they're used and cut and you can just measure.
and all quick release mtb forks will have the same axle width so don't worry about that either.

I would suggest you email surly and ask them. Salsa and Soma make them too. And plenty chinkshit options.

basically the standards/size you want is very straightforward and getting the geo right is non-critical but something you should think some about.

a surly fork is what, $150? $300 there gets you a choice of very nice restored rigid bikes. They would be a much bigger upgrade imo. And it's not an expensive experiment. You can easily get your money back if you don't like it. Or just go ride one and see and don't even buy it if you realise rigid 90s mtb is a meme.

these are nice too, tange mtb tubing, true temper ox etc etc. All bear haggling and depend on size obviously. Haggle one down and have a project for even less.

Iunno if your bike is your sole means of transport or not but it is nice having a couple so you can do stuff to one and still have a bike to ride or leave your mtb setup for winter or whatever. I'd also suggest considering buying a nice 90s road bike too for summer. Those are also great.
