yeah no shit I had the fucking Wuhan FaggotVirus in late February and got over it and was all set for my first race of 2020 with my new Cervelo road bike then everything got shut down. Now I have no fucking idea if there'll even BE a race season in 2021.

That's where the distinction between city and metro area comes in. City is strictly the administrative limits (which often are rather limited), metro area is "everything that belongs more to this city than to another city", and sometimes there's also an urban area given that's the city and surrounding stuff that's actually built up to a certain urbanized density and what you would actually think of when you hear metro area.
