None. I'd either arrange to take the bike inside wherever it is I need to be, or drive my car, or call Uber, or take a cab or bus or call a friend for a ride. You leave your bike for that long somewhere you may as well leave it unlocked, they'll have all the time in the world to steal it anyway.
You should not have any bike out of your line of sight when out anywhere unless you want it gone. Period. No lock will save you.

OnGuard Brute is the best U-lock for the price.
Complement that with a massive chainlock for the front wheel and most thieves will walk away without even trying. Replace all quick releases with Anti-theft skewers.

This system if you'd improve it a bit has a lot of potential. But dont actually ride it, just leave a couple of bikes with shitty locks around a place where you'd lock your bike

really the best setup for this is a bikesdirect steel frame bike.
reliable and cheap. the components have almost no resale value.
get 2 kryptonite u-locks to lock both wheels to the frame and an object on the sidewalk.
its literally not worth the trouble to steal.

True story, once parked a nice bike and locked the frame with a Kryptonite Evolution mini which is a seriously thicc and secure lock ONLY so I could take a dump at a supermarket. A few minutes at most. After I finished and walked outside, my bike was still there, but the saddle/seatpost and both wheels were gone. My bike was a quadruple amputee and I was just stunned because it didn’t occur to me that anyone would be brazen enough to do the two step in public carrying obviously stolen wheels and a bike seat in broad daylight.

That's why you get a chain lock like kryptonites evolution chains and lock both wheels. I take my nice road bike for shopping trips to the city(eu capital) and it is effectively joggerproof.

I remove the front wheel and both thru-axles, turn the bike upside down and lock the wheels and frame to anything metal attached to the ground under asphalt.

The only thing that a jogger could steal is the seatpost + seat, which would be rather inconvenient to remove if the bike is upside down.

I learned time ago from here that is better to use ulock (rear) + chain (front), aslo cable (seat)
or two ulocks of different size/model.
Also the type of key on locks is crucial.
Plus the anti-aesthetic effect.

I also wonder if using too many measures into it would increase the chances of the bike being vandalized instead of stolen just for the sake of frustation

I’ve been riding in the city for 8 years. All sorts of bikes. For 2 years my job was to ride bikes and promote cycling for CDOT. I’ve been to every nook and cranny and rode my bike to get there, all the while locking it up in the ‘worst’ parts of the city and for an entire year I locked my bike out front my loop office near city hall.

I use a small ulock around the back tire through the triangle. I would sometimes use a cable lock. I have (knock on wood) only had some straps stolen in Rogers park 5 years ago.

Basically though I would bring my bike inside any opportunity. I’m not worried about most people in neighborhoods stealing my bikes. But I live on the west side a block away from the 606, the Puerto Rican fixie goons around here will steal your shit.

But black neighborhoods are fine, they don’t drool over bikes like Mexicans and PRs do, plus they don’t have the tools to take shit apart.

My geared bikes have locking skewers and anything that has a Brooks I have cable locked.

I asked /n/ 10 years ago these same questions before moving here and I’ve kept the same mindset; if they want your bike they will take it no matter what. The point should be to make it more difficult than the bike next to you. Oh and don’t have something to flex with, it’s just asking to get stolen.

It's always possible to defeat bicycle locks in some way. But if the thief has the option to steal a bike that's locked with one single lock or the bike that's secured with two locks he will opt for the first. Also you should only leave the bike outside over a few minutes over the day
while you are in a shop or so. Not for hours in the ghetto or even over night.

Get a nice short heavy duty ulock and lock up the rear wheel and the rear triangle. Most thieves aren't technically skilled enough and angle grind the lock off without damaging the rear triangle.

I also suggest to watch out for dumby bike posts ,make sure you lift the post you'll parking your bike onto to see if it's lose or if it has any loose nuts or bolts.Never leave your bike out in public overnight.
