I thought half the attraction of fixies was you could brake by pedaling backwards (like on that tricycle you had when you were 3). Isn't that how they work or have I had that wrong all this time?

You could backpedal or skid to slow a fixie down but there's no reason to not run brakes, at least a front brake. A whole brake-set including levers and calipers is only like 2lbs. It's more than skidding or backpedaling, it's partly clean aesthetics (no brake or shifter lines make an a e s t h e t i c ride) and the other half is road feel via pedal feedback.
