>>1554194There is more than one conception of democracy. The one you're following is the so-called liberal (by a European understanding of the term) one. It sees democracy as purely procedural. If that's the best way to understand democracy is a matter of debate.
There's no debate, however, on the empirical reality that voting behavior and participation are filtered and influenced by numerous effects, attempting to list them would go well beyond the scope here. Also read up on hegemony theory.
