The left-to-right shift happened partly because of europeans constantly imposing their own moral judgement on american usage of the terms 'left' and 'right.' If someone didn't end up shifting towards the looney commie/progressive end of things they get dismissed with things like "well you weren't REALLY a leftist anyway, you were always a rightwinger under the mask."
But you are partly right. Most simply dipped out of political shit all together. They do not want their hobbies and daily life consumed by political bickering intruding into every compartment. Art and science have to be put before religion and politics otherwise you just get propaganda and motivated reasoning. And that gives you a pile of crap like Grant's nonexistent-braincell idea above.
