Biden being the candidate for blue is a fuckup by the DNC. They tried to use him in the impeachment procedure but he had to be a candidate to do so. But he was supposed to tank in the polls after - there was lots of propaganda spewed from his own side in order to make him less appealing after their ACTUAL pick - Harris - flopped early on, and Buttigieg became the pick. There was lots of mudslinging FROM the dems against each other, in a way that was unusually heavy, to try to shove down warren, bernie, etc. Then because Bloomberg wasn't informed of all this, he overtook the whole news cycle by forcing his ads down everyone's throat and ended up taking aggro off all the other candidates from how awful he is. This caused them to not change in position.
After that happened all of them just gave up besides Biden - the other ones all gave up within like 3 days of each other.
Then lo and behold who does the aging, alzheimers-addled ex-VP's handlers pick as his VP but Harris, the DNC favorite who was BTFO too early for their liking.
