Steamfag trying to learn more about diesel engines, what makes the EMD F units different from the E units? They both did freight and passenger shit, is there any reason to like the E more than F units?

E Units had the steam heaters for keeping trains warm in winter. They were usually longer in length and some E units had way different noses compared to the F units, like pic related. They were rarely used for freight service and were a bit more expensive and a bit more specialized. F units were cheaper, more numerous, more multipurpose, and shorter in length.

By the time they got to the E8s they had pretty much the same bulldog nose as the F units. The farther back you go the more slanty the nose on the Es and the cooler they looked.

Is there any reason why the Santa Fe likes F units for passenger trains? I know they had some E units but the classic meme train is a Santa Fe F unit in warbonnet livery..

Idea: Steam-diesel synthesis. Basically a steam loco, but you replace the water in the boiler with fuel, heat it up to drive the engine, then use (some of) the "preheated" fuel to fire the boiler (the rest is recirculated through coolers).

Nah, the real big brain strat is to have the train’s body look the exact same but there’s a couple of v16s inside powering the whole thing
