Why do cyclists run red lights?

This question gets asked on /o/ all the time, but it always devolves into shitposting because there aren’t any real cyclists over there. Can you guys educate me please so I can explain it to others in the future?

I have ridden a road bicycle before, but I was too scared to ride on the street so I rode on the footpaths. I ride a motorcycle every weekend though

It's different for us cyclists though because it's easier for a car to accelerate than it is for a bike

That's false, from what I see on freeways cagers mover over when they're splitting lanes and more often than not get thumbs up from them. Cyclists are niggers of the road, nobody likes them.

It's not unusual for cagers to run red lights eithere. You could just as well ask why they do it.

But when it comes to cyclists, my theory is that it's about momentum. On a bicycle it takes quite a bit of effort to accelerate up to speed if you want to go fast. More effort than maintaining speed. So when you've built up the speed you're quite disinclined to brake if you don't have to. Instead you become more inclined to take chances in order to conserv your momentum.

When I’m on my motorcycle, other riders are all bros. I can ride up next to another rider at a red light and share his lane, and we can take off at the same time with the rule being that he who was there first goes ahead. The same applies on the open road, faster riders will pass me in my lane when I move to the inside and this is no problem

Does the same apply to a cyclist? Obviously not in a car, but can I pass a cyclist in his lane on the open road at 100km/h? If I lane split up next to a cyclist, who should go first?

Is not our fault that the administration puts ridiculously low. Like tomorrow I was driving my car down the road when I entered a school zone with a 30KM/H speed limit.
A perfectly fine road 6 meters wide with a generous 1 meter wide sidewalk, I tried to follow the limit but in first gear my engine was stalling (it dropped below 5k rpm!) and I had to ride the clutch to prevent it from stalling. I normally ride along this street at a safe 70km/h without any problem. Engineers have to understand that modern automobiles with ventilated disc brakes can stop much faster than ever before so there's no real need for speed limits below 70 km/h in general. Erratic behavior by people on foot is the principal cause of death on the roads not speed

I only run punitive red lights. On some roads there is authoritarian, socialist and dystopian system where if you drive at walk speed (something like 40km/h) you are reward with a green light (similar to the social credit system in China). Of course I always drive to a safe 100km/h in this street and if the intersection is empty I run the light.

100km/h definitely not unless very large lane.
But a speed equal or lower than 50km/h is safe to pass in the same lane imho as the air moved by two wheels vehicles is minimal compared to a car. Also consider that 50cc motorcycles (limited to 45km/h) must ride on the cyclepath in rural areas in the Netherlands and they don't seem to cause any particular harm close passes

Because they don't want to have to start pedaling to get speed after stopping at a stop sign or traffic light. I once destroyed a cyclist with my pickup because he ran a stop sign and I was on a main road with the right of way. Thank God I have a dash cam.

Because a cyclist is an upgraded pedestrian. Cyclists command 20-40times less kinetic energy ( thus destructive potential ) then a car at cruising speed for both. Thus the length of the leash for both is inversely proportional.

As a bonus - cyclist's field of view is much wider.

If running a red light is safe - thus you can plot a path that is both safe for you and other members of traffic - then it is a perfectly safe manouver. If things go awry - the cyclist is the one bearing the brunt of the damage, this he is also more careful.

In the end - among members of traffic cyclists are below pedestrians, public transport and emergency services when it comes to 'rights'. Private cars are dead last.

1.5m, it's supposed to be a safety gap (this is why cyclists take lanes, giving the edge of the road/parked cars that distance results in them being in the middle)

Mirrors maybe, though in practice the view is too shaky unless it's a helmet mirror (which has its own issues). Indicators can be useful at night but I haven't seen a decent implementation for them. Plates are a big lolno.

In my own experience, I get a lot of friendly gestures from motorcyclists so I'm guessing bros. But obviously that may vary depending on local riding cultures.

yeah, but your engine is idling so you can keep going when you're ready. you don't kill the engine when you come to a stop. we don't either if we can help it. but if there's another car in my line, I stop. if not, I go.
when I drive, I come to full stops because I can't see and hear what's going on well enough to make the calls that I make on a bike, and I don't care because I'm in a motorized barcalounger that doesn't require any effort from me to get started again.

Bicycle predates the car as a mode of transportation.
Spoiler: All automobile laws are in effect only when you get caught, and are more like guidelines for determining infractions, fault and damages in court. Meaning if you get hurt and you were following the law, it's likely that you are not held at fault. While if you get hurt or hurt someone while NOT following the law you pay the price. A cop that cites you is doing so to maintain the real threat of punishment for breaking the law, giving it "teeth" and ensuring that the default state is following it. Cars can do a U'ie in the middle of the road as long as nobody else is around and there's room, for example. A motorcyclist splitting lanes is horribly dangerous and while a lot don't get caught, those that do or fuck it up are stuck with the consequences.

Because it feels silly being forced to follow traffic rules that were made exclusively for cars. Like for instance waiting at the crossing for over 30secs after the crossing traffic has already a red light.
So now when you arrive at a crossing like that, it's free from traffic, and you know you will get green light in the next few seconds, why the hell would you stop, only to have to accelerate from 0 again a few seconds later?

This is also per billion vehicle miles. Meaning it's fucking 35 deaths per 1,000,000,000 miles for a cyclist. The risk drops even lower when you consider that a cyclist doesn't go that far - someone who commutes to work, say, a close and cozy 10 miles each way, 5 days a week, plus 5 miles shopping on the weekend plus 40 miles of "fitness/leisure riding" per week for exercise and recreation -
(10*5+5+40)*52= 4940 miles.
If my shit math is right, that's a 0.015808% chance to die per year for a bicyclist. Not 1%, O-point zero one five eight.

Let's do a driver -
Assume this driver commutes 25 miles, he has the range, 5 days a week. Let's assume the same distance as the cyclist for groceries, and bump up the additional leisure-miles to 240 - about 2 hours both-ways per week total, highway speed.
(25*5+5+240)*52 = 19240 miles per year
Let's add in the fatality risk -
and we get 0.005772% chance of dying each year. Or about a third the risk of the bicyclist.
Assuming the motorcyclist has similar travel rates as the car driver, his risk of death is 23.4728% per year. SUBSTANTIALLY higher. Ridiculously so. But this is such an outlier among other vehicles, you have to ask - why? I don't have the answer.

The pedestrian is so low due to the low mileage I don't think calcing it is necessary.

In fact if you look at exactly how many fatalities happen year on year on a bike, you'll find it's so low this narrative of murderous cagers vanishes faster than your bike left unattended in camden. It brings to mind how the fucking statistics of how many black people are shot by police doesn't jive with the narrative...

That being said, when you do stop, people gap with mouths open, cross themselves, and wave you through even if they have a right-of-way. They just aren't use to seeing someone actually follow the law.

if things are not too busy the traffic moves slow enough that people turning left are only delayed around three seconds maybe

I would say for bikes around a foot is reasonable, but really its half as much (or less) in cramped city's but I'm mindful not to bump anyone's car
an entire bike is not much wider than 18 to 20 inches anyway
besides that cars and trucks do displace a lot of air at 80 to 100 kph and any fuck up is going to do a lot more than scratch some paint to ding a mirror

rear view mirrors would vibrate too much to be useful on most bikes + the helmet mounted ones a kinda ghee
illuminated Indicators are banned from being used on bicycles where I live lol, but there is an expectation that bicyclists indicate
number plates are not going to solve anything other than having fewer bikes on the road

I would say on the whole motor cycles are enemies even if they suffer many of the same privations
esp the way e bikes behave, along with unregistered Vespas and farm bikes speeding on MUP or cycle lanes, it just means more bollards are put up

most of the streets in town used to have a tram line though the middle and are farely wide but the width is taken up by angle parking bays of around 45 degrees
in town its an un easy stand off between bikes and cars, there is a little bit of cycling infrastructure but most of it is built on top of old causeway embankments that the trams used to use
in the countryside things are nearer to malice homicide as the roads are too narrow and flanked by two to three foot deep drainage ditches

most drivers are not to bad, they will usually go into the opposite lane to pass a bike that is not blatantly obstructive
but utes / lorrys are quite bad for not giving enough room to anyone

a few years back I used to bike with my handle bar almost hitting the wing mirrors of parked cars
but later on I figured that being further away from the parked cars makes it easier for the people inside them to see me
traffic coming from behind me seems more concerned with how predictable my movements are and if I have seen them or not
once I can tell they have seen me we can both give up a little space

I used to ride the shoulder and try to give lots of space but after I realized I was going to get screamed at for being in the road by cagers no matter how much space I gave I started taking the lane and riding with my hands off the handlebars on busy road specifically to make cagies rage.

Can either cyclists or drivers explain to me why pedestrians feel the need to walk in the middle of the street when the sidewalks are perfectly good to use and empty as well? And why don't people get as angry at them as they should?

I've only seen that happen when there's either a shitty/no sidewalk and the gutter is at enough of an angle that it's unstable footing, hot-weather (cali/fl) cloud cuckoo lander morons, asians in asia, and jews in the NY area.
