Anyone remember the old /sailboat/ thread that lasted for years before getting bumped off in 2015 or so?

I'm the dickhead that deliberately spammed the catalogue so the thread disappeared.

Thanks OP, I’m glad you made this thread. I want to get into sailing by this coming summer. What’s the best way to start? I’ve been wanting to sail for some time and have looked into it a bit but I’d love to hear what advice you all have to offer. Thinking of taking a class or two first to actually get a feel for it before I go out and buy my own boat.

Classes are a good way to go if they are available to you. Otherwise if you have a yacht club that does racing they usually have a way for newbies to get onto a boat. People are always in need of extra bodies since nobody has enough friends and will take any random just for the extra weight or to pull a unimportant line. Buying a boat sucks and you should be a guilt free member of the other people's boat club as long as you can stand it then probably buy a small dinghy (something like a Laser) to get a nice intro to what owing a boat means for money/maintenance/lifestyle.

Was that the thread with the pasta about the guy and his dad who went sailing, got dismasted and floated aimlessly off the coast of Australia for 6 weeks during which time they went nuts and kept ambushing and raping each other aboard the boat and it was really awkward when they got rescued? I'd keep only 1 master and 1 small bedroom + 1 optional on couch. All the rest becomes storage space and other utility rooms.
Do people ever sailed on overcrowded boat? shits sucks ass, woever thinks 2 familes can do long trips in 10 sq m is fucking dumb.

People like to invite guests on their yachts, yes, or charter them as groups to split the costs. Dinking around on your own twiddling your thumbs only captivates a minority crowd, and that crowd wouldn't buy catamarans or trimarans with huge raised cockpit living rooms anyway, they prefer monopulls for a variety of reasons. I'm not saying I'd have a use for eight to ten beds, but that's the reality of it.

Why is almost every sailboat a bermuda sloop nowadays?
Is it because of factors intrinsic to that rig, or is it just a matter of convention, as in that's how people expect a sailboat to look like?

I, for one, prefer the "age of sail" vibe the lugger and gaff rigs give, even if they are lame for racing.

One mast and fewer sails = lower cost and easier handling up to a point, also easier to sail upwind than multiple masts. However at a certain boat size the sails of a bermuda sloop become so large they can't be handled by a single person anymore, and eventually even two persons. If I had all the money in the world I'd get a bermuda staysail rigged equal mast schooner with cockpit winches custom built though, just for the manageable size of each sail and the redundancy of parts. You could lose either mast at sea and rig the other one as a bermuda sloop to get to the next port, even reusing parts and sails of the broken mast. The redundancy is a thing of beauty.

Low-tech rigs like the lug, junk, gaff and sprit sails are in fact lower cost and simpler to handle, because the stresses are lower on them and the shorter and stronger masts need less stays or none at all (and make the boat less top-heavy, too).

A lugger yawl or ketch e.g. has the same number of sails as a bermuda sloop, and the mizzen can be used for things a foresail cannot.

Also, unless you sail it upwind close to the very limit, it is not significantly worse in performance, while being quite noticeably better downwind.

The problem isn't three double cabins.
The problem is three double cabins and only one head, and it doesn't even have a split shower.
I'd delete the lower deck double cabin, put a second head there (doesn't need to have a shower), and separate the shower from the toilet in the first one. The two berths in the outriggers should go, replaced with more bunkerage.

What is owning a small dinghy like? I want to get into sailing and they're cheap as hell. Do you have to winterize them? I sailed a sunfish at summer camp like 5 years ago so I know a little but not too much.

So I have a mooring slot that's occupied by a little 4 meter outboard engine boat that has been sitting there since neither me or my parents use it, but if we sell it, we'd lose the slot. I was thinking of getting some kind of sailboat some time down the line that would fit there, since then maybe I'd have a reason to actually sail the damn thing every once in a while.

The problem is that it has to be shallow draft in order to fit there and i'd like to be able to pull it out on a cart at the small local shipyard where we also repaint the current boat.

Maybe something like a laser would suffice, but I'd still like something you could fit more people on.
Is it even worth considering? Are there caveats about sailboats that will still bite me in the ass? Is shallow draft a meme altogether?
