I've had the same pair of road shoes for 10 years now and after 40-50,000 miles they're pretty beat. The main reason I've stuck to them this long (aside from the fact that they still work fine despite being scarred and ugly) is that I have SPD-R pedals on my bikes and I like them since they take metal cleats that seem near indestructible. Just curious if anyone can comment on what I should expect if I go to modern shoes with plastic cleats. Any brands I should look at other than Sidi if I want my next pair to go strong for the next 50,000 miles?

For 8 you shouldn't go freewheel at all, get a rear wheel with a cassette and freehub body at that point, otherwise you'll be prone to breaking axles. If you're sticking with friction shifters you don't need to change the derailer, but if you're going indexed you'll near a derailer designed for that. Otherwise no, nothing to change going from 6 to 7.

6 speed indexing is a weird thing since you could be talking about really old stuff like Suntour Accushift and that's a whole different thing, but if you're talking about Shimano derailers (or clones of the same) the shift ratio stays the same so you can use the same derailer with just about any matching set of shifters and cassette/fw.

Is there such a thing as clamp on brake mounts? There's an old klunker style bike I want to buy and send down hills but it has no mounts for any kind of brakes and coaster brakes scare me

Front brake - long reach caliper or fork swap to one with canti/v posts or disc tabs.

Could also find a framebuidler to weld canti bosses on.

Repack classically was drum brakes but fuck if i know how to find drum brake wheels 50 years later

Hey guys first post on /n/

I want to get a speedometer for my bicycle which I've been trying to ride more, its a KHS Urban extreme I believe.
The basic amazon offered hall effect wireless style looks okay, and the analogue one that I saw on there is pretty cool too, but I dont believe it would work with my quick release style hubs.
This isn't a silly thing to want is it? I think it would be nice to know how fast I'm going because I have a really hard time gauging distance or speed on a bike when I'm going fast or biking for more than an hour.

Its pretty common to have a speedometer on a bike. Many people use GPS units now, but the wheel magnet ones are much cheaper and you don't have to charge them all the time.

The sensor attaches to a fork arm and a magnet attaches to a spoke, so hub type is irrelevant.

the derailleur should shift it, the clicks are all on the shifter.

reasons why RD won't handle more gears:
>slight possibility the limits won't reach
your limit screws limit the pulleys from overshooting the innermost and outermost gears so it doesn't throw the chain. dialing one or the other limit screws out a bit will reset the limit more outward to accommodate more gears.
there is a limit to how far outward from center the limits will reach before the screws unscrew themselves from the body of the mech, but there ought to be plenty of room for a gear or two. you can eyeball it before you buy anything.
>the cage on your pulleys cannot wrap around a greater number of teeth
if your new gear cluster's lowest gear (big inner gear) has a greater number of teeth than your last cluster, it MAY be a problem (may not, though).
it depends on the length of the cage holding the pulleys. a short cage can go up to I believe 28t before the cage rubs over the gear. if you already have a long-cage rear derailleur, then you're good. you can look up your specs online easily enough. I think the crazy new MTB cassettes with 50t gears need a special RD but shouldn't be an issue for you.

he's right.
that crank is a "shimano" without any model designated. it's a triple (nothing technically wrong with that, but shimano's good stuff is now single or double crank and big ass rear gears). most importantly, there are no bolt holes, all the gears are riveted in place and instead of unbolting and replacing worn gears, you have to throw the whole crank in the garbage.
this crank is made solely for Walmart BSO shit tier bikes.
without knowing anything about this bike, the crank tells its entire story. do not buy.

In that same 300€ price point there is the Hoprider 100 from decathlon but i don’t know if it’s much better.
It’s a lot to ask but would you have anything to recommend for some light touring at that price or is that too low for a new bike?
When it comes to the used market as a newcomer im a bit at loss at what to look at for.

Specialized S-Works shoes are really durable in my experience, especially considering their low weight. I got a pair of S-Works 7 shoes a couple of years ago and have beat the shit out of them, but the uppers still look nice. The soles are scuffed up from a few impromptu hikes up rocky fire roads and climbing up the side of the odd massive fucking bastard sinkhole. Have crashed with them a few times too. If you're used to normal SIDI, Specialized has a wider toebox, but not as wide as SIDI Mega. Gaerne and Lake also make excellent shoes.

Newer plastic cleats will not last as long, maybe a few thousand miles. The tradeoff is that they're more walkable.

I started to ride more seriously as a workout recently, and I'm getting pain in my right hip. It hurts slightly on the outside when I put pressure to walk on it. My bike is slightly big (54cm frame, 5'7"), but I fit the seat well so my knee is bent on the downstroke.

What doesn't make sense though is I only get the pain when I wake up in the morning. During rides and after rides I don't feel it at all. Just to test it out today, I went on an easy 5 mile ride and now the pain is gone. Is it just normal when starting to ride harder, or is this cause for concern?

In any case, inspect your bike for anything that's not symmetrical, like mismatched pedals, or a crooked saddle, bent handlebars, or improperly installed brake levers
It could also just be shitty form, ride with someone else and ask them to see if you're riding slanted on one side, it's something I come across pretty frequently

Just worry about keeping it running nice, clean it, lube it, and tune the shifters and brakes.

Sillier to not have one.

They all work just by counting magnet sensor readings and doing some rudimentary math, so the cheap ones and the expensive ones are functionally equivalent. The only questions are whether you want wired or wireless (recommended) and whether it will last more than a week before breaking. Either

A) Buy the cheapo Bell one at walmart for <$10 and save the receipt so you can replace it when it breaks. Used to use these, have had them last anywhere between 2 days and 3 years. If you're inclined to cheap out, just do this because returning shit to walmart is easier and faster than returning shit to amazon.

B) Buy an actual good one for ~$40 that will last forever. Around here you can get a bontrager gotime in pretty much every sporting goods or bike store which has been bulletproof for me. Otherwise maybe this

I know next to nothing but guy at bike shop said I could go to 28 up from 25 with current rims. Need to replace tube/tire anyway. He said the tubes for my 25 tire would work for the 28. Is this tube going to work for the new 28? I'm patching the old tube anyways, thanks I'm ignorant.

I bought a new bike today,

Front derailleur was shifting okay (a bit stubborn) while riding it home,

took it out for another spin and it wasn't shifting at all, I stopped to have a look at it and it moves, but not far enough to push the chain, also doesn't lift at all. I'm a novice so I don't know much

so if by stability they mean rigidity/stiffness...
i'm not terribly bothered by the ~25 gram difference but will i get laughed at for going overkill on the spokes
and maybe the alpine iii will be less likely to break like if i hit a bump at a high speed while carrying a load

i thought cars were going too slow but it was me who was going too fast
having a speedometer is fine but i'm just saying that it's not very useful per se since you have to adapt your speed to how you're feeling, how many watts you can normally put out over a given distance, how confident you are in your cornering and braking etc

Depends on the temperature. For really low temperatures you want sth. windproof. Apart from that the Buff ones are great for not so cold weather, get at least a midweight one. I wear a bataclava some times and a gripgrap hat under the helmet so keep my ears warm.

Looks like it's halfway through a shift (trying to move from bigass last cog to second-to-last), hence the noises, and it jams at the end because that's what happens when you pedal backwards mid-shift
It probably just needs a turn of the barrel adjuster

so i don't think cx-ray and aerolite would be stiff enough for my liking
aero comp are probably stiff enough but i think 1.8mm diameter round spokes will be more laterally stiff than 1.2mm wide aero spokes and the aero penalty is marginal at best in my circumstances
>Round spokes for sure have some aero penalty associated but it’s not dramatic. Definitely non-zero but also definitely not first order. Other things to consider! You will also notice aero spokes will make cross wind riding considerably more twitchy…AND if you do decide to go with aero spokes make sure the spoke is absolutely parallel with the track of the wheel. It’s easy to get them a little off & then you’ll have an overall aero penalty vs round spokes instead of an advantage. Heaven forbid one of your aero spokes works its way to an orthogonal position.

Hey /n/ I posted a while back about converting this suspension fork into a rigid fork with eyelets. Someone suggested getting a 29er fork to compensate for the height of the suspension. I found a really good deal and grabbed one for dirt cheap brand new.

A few questions.
Can I keep my original 26inch wheel and just use it on the 29er fork? If I need a new 29er, any recommendations? I've been looking over CL, Facebook, Offerup, and Ebay. I'm a little lost, it would be great if I can keep my 26 and then my Axel to Crown should be similar to the original set up.

What are some really good fenders and rack for this thing?

Also any recommendations on a second set of wheels to toss studded tires onto?

My entire point for this build is to have something weird, unique, and dumb but also utilitarian.

It's mostly grassy stuff that's maintained but generally not for walking on - usually there's stairs for people to move up the steep parts or paths around them. But other places it's just concrete slopes to flat

eh, I'd shift my weight as far rearward as possible and slightly lift the front wheel like an inch (or just totally un-weight it) just as I hit the transition and roll through it. if you need to modulate your speed, do it before the transition and again after if needed. you want to roll through it with no brakes.
not sure if that's your issue but that's how I ride stuff like that, anyway

Schwalbe big apple for 26.
For 29, pick a panaracer gravelking variant you prefer. 700c and 29er are the same rim diameter so you can interchange them within reason. 29er is just built for mtb impacts and wider tires. Don't know of dedicated 29er smoothies besides shitty chink walmart cruiser tires that roll worse.

Tourist here, I got told by you guys about tyre liners a few days ago but I have a couple of questions:

I was going to grease them but then I started reading and there is plenty of contradictory advice online. Previous pedal threads were ungreased. Barnett's manual recommends greasing the threads thoroughly, but no general guidelines as to the type of grease recommended for threads. I read online that grease containing copper might end up reacting with aluminium.

You don't (unless you have a lefty fork). You can patch it though, but it's not worth the trouble just to avoid removing the wheel. If you're unwilling to remove the wheel there is something wrong with your bike or with you.

I don't, I just do it to patch it and ifthe tube needs replacing I take it into the shop. I've very few tools and hate having to do anything mechanically to this bike frankly, even fixing punctures pisses me off.

That depends on what you find pleasurable. The ride quality on 20" wheels isn't that much different from regular tire sizes, assuming you're on decent pavement. Cuts through grass and dirt as well as a road bike, handles predictably, etc.

The main reason why I don't just remove the wheel is because there's more to it than just undoing a bolt. Even if it's the front wheel that has the puncture (which is true only only 10% of the time), I'd still have to disconnect the brakes in order to free the wheel, and historically I've failed every time I've tried that shit.

As for the back wheel then the chain and shit come into play as well, and we're always way past the threshold of my tolerance for repairing bikes myself as it is before that.

Torque relates to the tension in each fastener and thus the clamping force in between component. That force should be enough to keep a sturdy connection, but too much force could cause unneccesary stresses or permanently deform parts. i know you want to see it already but the build could take quite a while as i have so much unrelated, semi-related and related bullshit to take care of
at the last minute i discovered that the entry level wheels i bought had 9.5mm dia wheel axles instead of 9/10mm so i've sent them back, the shop apparently took old wider spaced hubs and changed out the spacers on the rear hubs to offer them in different widths, not sure if 9.5x120mm is a thing, on modern track framesets you expect 9x100mm in the front and 10x120mm in the rear
i've decided on alpine iii spokes just for added bombproofness and potentially a little bit more stiffness, i don't mind the ~25g weight increase for the wheelset but i haven't ordered the wheel stuff yet

and i got a cheap carbon stem from amazon that i have some doubts about but i'll have to a closer look at it and see if it sits flat enough against the spacers and maybe get 1-2mm spacers so that i can cut the steerer according to a 40mm stem height without the actual stem height being too short

That said, that's the tradeoff with cheap parts, sometimes they'll be absolute shoddy crap or sometimes they're good if just ugly or they have an imperfect finish like the stem you mention.

Not sure if you have easy access to that, but sometimes at bikeshops they'll have cheaper high end fit parts like stems and saddles from customers that change them first thing after getting a bike, could be a safer alternative to amazon/ebay/ali diving for cheap ones if you don't mind having a mishmash of factory brand logos. But then there's also that time they tried to sell me a heavy as fuck BMC stock seatpost for $50 usd lol.

This anon again. Figured out the issue, piriformis syndrome, which came from overtraining and creating a muscle imbalance. Thinking about it, does seem kinda silly I went from 0 (riding less than 15 miles a week with occasional long rides) to 100 (230 miles 15k ft climbing in 2 weeks)

If the stem was scuffed out of the box and you have more doubts about it you could just return it to be safe though.

Just because you can tighten things tight enough like ikea furniture doesn't mean your precision or accuracy is anywhere near 10%. No one needs a torque wrench to tighten stem bolts to tight enough for metal simply because there's a huge range of acceptable torque. You could be 50% your target torque and still be fine but 10% lmao.

Don't even pretend your sense of force is calibrated. Weighing things with your hands is a learned skill, and I don't mean comparing two objects. And that's in one specific orientation. If you think you can do this, you should be able to get a gallon milk jug and fill it up with water to 3kg +/-10% just be feel and not looking at the water level.

One could, but you don't which is the point. It's a learned skill by people with the capability to actually torque things to spec instead of just assuming they don't need a torque wrench because they can do it within 10% by feel and either think lifting 4kg is impressive or overtighten by 10 times over.

I just came from fudging about with some weights, a guitar string and the 4mm allen. My stem bolts were done up to 5.6-5.7 Nm by feel. I do agree that it's learned though, I'll try the water thing next time I'm doing something like that and see how I do there, I'm pretty sure I'm just used to how the 5-6Nm range should feel and just sort of go from there.

The torque wrench debate is silly, the truth is that for most bike parts 'feels tight enough' is fine. If it's a little tight, no big deal and damage is typically minor. If it's a little loose, that's usually not a problem because you notice when things loosen up, and most of the damage caused by loose parts is easily fixable (though it does lead to a regular stream of people who buy new pedals and then strip the threads in their crankarm a week later and then predictably insist that their cranks were defective). You suck at measuring torque but it doesn't matter because precision isn't required.

But then came carbon fiber and cranks that are held together by a single threaded fitting, and here you really can break expensive parts or suffer catastrophic failure more readily, so the smart play is to use a torque wrench when working with those kinds of parts. And now that you, as a responsible mechanic have the tool, you can use it to check your work elsewhere and that's a good thing.

I'm saying the problem is people without a torque wrench think well gee, I can tighten metal by feel, I must be pretty good at estimating torque within 10% precision and accuracy. This carbon thing says 5-6Nm, well I can do that because my metal stuff didn't slip. Why is it slipping, let me just tighten that some more, still slips, tighten some more, CRACK.

This happens because metal parts are usually pretty tolerant of wrong torque. Tighten until it doesn't slip doesn't always work with carbon because you could tighten to spec and it could still slip. If you have a torque wrench, you don't overtighten it until it cracks, and if it slips you know you need carbon assembly paste, not more torque. It's not that you need a torque wrench, it's that idiots think because they can tighten up metal parts that makes them a human torque wrench and come up with completely arbitrary claims like they can do it within 10%.

I also tell people tell people to use torque wrenches for square taper crank bolts and bottom brackets because spec is usually much tighter than they expect.

too bad i didn't take a before pic... the scuffed area that was visible from the side looked the worst as if it was a deep scratch that had gone into the fibers but it cleared up in literally just a few seconds with menzerna super finish plus 3800 on a microfiber cloth. the very bottom took more elbow grease to go from completely matte to mostly glossy with fine scuff marks. now on close inspection with my phone flashlight i see there are a couple of other spots on the bottom of the stem with these fine scuff marks but it won't be a problem to polish the whole stem and wax it.

This, qft. You need a tq wrench to learn how it feels in the first place. You can't just jump on a normal wench without ever using a tq wrench and claim you're a human tq wrench who can tq down to 10.00001%+/- and even then, 10% of a 10nm tq value is 1nm, that difference can sometimes no shit lead to catastrophic failure.

However, Wrong torque on a critical item can get you killed, or cost you time getting it redone. You can borrow a friend’s torque wrench until you get a feel for what the various ranges are.

I doubt you have a friend to borrow from though. But in the end it’s your ride at risk. Not a big deal.

Not sure if this is the right thread or if I should used the bike buy one. I got a Radrunner 1 earlier this year cause meme but now I wanna sell it cause it's more like a scooter than a bike and I don't really use it much anymore. Problem is I can't find any used ones for sale so I have no idea what to ask for it. It was $1,200 new, brakes need tuning, and there's some cosmetic damage from bungieing a pannier to the rack since it's proprietary garbo that doesn't fit normal sized panniers (pic related), but otherwise it's in good condition. Any suggestions on how much to ask for it?

I can Google "top road bike routes", but most are shared road. I'm aware of rails-to-trails, but that's all gravel.

Is anyone aware of longer paved trails with little to no auto traffic?

I dont think that there is much especially since every /n/igger retrofits his 90s mtb with a wide riser and lower profile knob tires, you basically get a klunker without torpedo brakes.

No individual task is especially complicated, but knowing which things you need to do and which parts work with other parts is. And people forget stuff all the time; I've had to tell the junior mechs how to adjust a front derailleur like a dozen times each because they always forget one thing or another. They don't even touch the bikes that have the new style Shimano ones. And then sometimes you get unlucky and you get a bike where the disc brake mount isn't faced properly so it'll never be perfect.

I think the problem is with the chain and the chain rings, when I switch gears to the smallest rear ring or the largest front ring pedaling feels loose as if the chain's not properly secured. The chain has straight up slipped out and off the rings when I stood up to start pedaling from a stop, it didn't use to do that regardless of the gear it was on. For a while I thought my rear derailler was fucked but now I'm not sure.

Can you explain this I little more.
My immediate thoughts are your derailleures are not properly adjusted, and/or your smallest sprocket and your large chainring are worn.

For maintenance resources, Sheldo Brown is a venerable but somewhat dated resource, and Park Tool guys have an extensive collection of you tube videos as well as tutorials in text form on their site.

Only you can answer that. Try going on a couple rides around your area and don't allow yourself to touch the shifters at all. If that doesn't hinder you at all then sure, a singlespeed might make sense.

there is not much reason to convert a working bike to single speed, gears can be very useful for riding in varied terrain, but it's for you to decide if the conversion is worth it for the looks and the slight weight savings
without horizontal dropouts you might not be able to line up the chain links perfectly so you would then need a chain tensioner which also looks a bit ugly like a derailleur
usually the conversion is only done on cheap used bikes which are not worth to repair otherwise

It's very hilly here, but nothing exaggerated, mostly about 300 meter gain over 2 km, and a lot of ups and downs, and I usually don't ride it for very long because there are mostly single lane roads all around my town (small town) so I don't like to go alone.
I wanted to hit skate parks with it, but it was mostly for the looks, I find single speed bikes without chain tensioners to be very very pretty.
But you guys made me change my mind, especially the example about the car with only a third gear and my bike don't have the horizontal dropouts, i also usually ride with a high cadence (I think it's high, don't know how to measure), and I think I would miss that a bit.

Thanks a lot for the tips, maybe I will look for a bmx or a used 26 to play around.

According to an interview with the Park Tool owner that guy is the directory of education. Among other things he wrote the first Big Blue Book. Also wrote a curriculum for bike shops to run maintenance classes during the off season. My guess is that now he's management and mostly assigns people to come up with training material for their various products.

Hello again anon's, I have another question for you.
Pic related is my sis bike, it's an hybrid and she hardly ever ride it.
I wanted to know if I could take her tires and use on the rims of my bike since I mostly ride on the town, and very rarely take it off road, her tyres are 700x35.

They're both made for the same diameter of rim (622mm) and going from 50mm to 35mm on yours should be fine, but depending on her frame the 50mm tires might be too wide to fit on hers. Hard to tell for sure from the pictures but it doesn't look like there's a whole lot of room to spare on the back tire especially.

So to adjust the spring tension in each arm, get a wrench on the wrench flats in green, loosen the mounting bolt and rotate the spring adjustment with the wrench. You'll rotate away from the wheel to add tension, so for the side in the pic it would be counter-clockwise. Then as you're holding the spring adjustment in place with the wrench, tighten the mounting bolt back up. Like you noted, most brakes have a screw to adjust the spring tension, so these aren't as common. This type of spring is found on most BMX brakes, so here's a decent vid showing that, in case my description was shitty.

I have ultegra with cables and I wish the shifting was *more* difficult. I frequently accidentally shift down in front when trying to adjust trim. If you're complaining about the difficulty of shifting in a groupset with a DI2 option you have the hand strength of a literal toddler.

Why not just setup your derailleur limits and tension right the first time and have a barrel adjuster if tuning is needed on the fly?
Out of all the STI equipped bikes I've owned and ridden, I can't remember ever having to trim (I am a pretty decisive shifter though FWIW.)

If there are enough spacers (those black rings that aren't doing anything else) it's easy to fix if you have hex wrenches:
- loosen the two hex bolts holding the stem on and push everything down
- tighten the bolt in the cap on top of the steerer tube until it's just snug
- retighten bolts on stem (your handlebar will probably have twisted relative to the wheel in the process so get that lined up)

If you tightened the top cap too much there'll be some resistance when you try to move the wheel left and right. To test it's not too loose either, hold the brakes and push it forward and back along the ground. If there's a knocking feel it needs to be tighter.

If you don't have enough spacers the top cap won't be able to press on the stem (or a spacer above the stem) and it will just hit the steerer tube (the metal tube underneath). You'd need to get another spacer from a bike shop.

To see if you need more spacers, take the cap on top off. When the stem and spacers are all slid down as far as they can go the steerer tube in the middle should be at least a couple mm below the top of the stem/spacer on top.

If that isn't it you must've not pressed everything down far enough.

tl;dr: bike is 10 years old with lots of rust (frame is rust free but the paint is scratched to hell). i'm very comfortable with this frame and i'd like to keep it (if it's worth it). i have ~400 europesos to spend and i'm asking if throwing that much money on an old frame is a horrible idea or just a bad idea.

i have a pic related. i got it more than 10 years ago when i was still in high school but haven't used it at all the past 5 since i bought a motorcycle. i live in a very humid and salty climate (near sea) so wheels, front shocks, brakes and seat are completely rusted. bars and stem are aluminium aftermarket so they are fine. the frame is also aluminium but since I used to ride it everywhere, it's full of scratches. the gears are all factory so they are worn out and need replacing anyway (aside from rust).
i'd like to start riding again because i've put on a few kg and i don't feel comfortable going to the gym with covid going on. my budget is about 400 euros
i was thinking since i like this frame so much i should just swap everything out. i'm not looking for something crazy but definitely something better than what i have. that means 1 more gear in the cassette, hydraulic disc brakes, locking suspension. i have checked with a local shop (not the best prices) and i can get what i want with 400-450.
on the other hand, maybe with 400-450 i can get something newer that isn't outright better, but at least it has "newer technologies" (if that is even a thing, i don't know how fast bike tech evolves).
