They are? The only cable cars I can think of in Europe are in Lisbon. I mean there's tons of cable pulled trolleys, but they aren't using a loop to attach to like in the SF/Lisbon cable cars I think.

And the only reason they survived in SF is due to the incredible geography, and the relative isolation of the system against the larger Muni system. When Muni was partially dismantled and slated for total dismantling in the 60s the cable cars were spared due to tourism. It's not something that should be taken for granted. Ditto for Nevada's V&T but with "real" trains.

Yeah, I still don’t know what OP’s getting at. Burgerland has plenty of heritage streetcar lines and funiculars, although San Francisco does have the only true cable car system in the U. S. which by my definition means a continuous cable pulling cars on a street railway.
As to the other topic that’s arisen, sometimes you have to step over some hobo shit to see vintage street railways in action. Growing up in Louisiana, the sleaze of New Orleans was bearable to be able to ride 1920s vintage streetcars on the St. Charles line.

Something I didn't know until very recently, there used to be a system in Providence, likely using the East Side Transit Tunnel

In the 1880s before the perfection of electric trolley technology, there were cable car systems all over the U.S. Manhattan was crisscrossed with cable lines like this one under construction in Union Square. Because of steep hills, San Francisco and Seattle (til 1940) were the last cable car holdouts.

This excuse always seemed weak to me. Most states are the size of small nations that are able to connect their major cities by rail. This would mean only connecting like 5 cities by train. Larger states can build at least a somewhat comprehensive network of rails in their largest cities. Lack of political will and financial priority makes more sense than sheer size. If size was an issue, we wouldn't have an Interstate system.

Many sizeable metro areas cover multiple states. If you really stretch the definitions of these metro areas, Washington and Boston both cover 5 states/state equivalents (DC, VA, MD, WV, PA for Washington, MA, RI, CT, NH, ME for Boston)
