>>1574264>>Basically what it boils down to is why do Americans hate trains so much? >Passengers trains fall behind airplanes and cars in terms of price, speed and conviniece (car not only get your into town but also around). What is the point? In EU HSR tickets cost more then air tickets, despite all subsidy. Its potemkin village of euro socialism that doesn't make travel affordable. Not true, the time it takes for you to get to the airport, check-in, pass security and start boardinf is slower than taking the train from one city/town to, at least in a time range within 2-4 hours. It's more convenient taking the train if you're travlleing across multiple countries on a weekend, my last minute train ticket from Milano - Munich costed €45 in standard economy, entire journey took 5 hours but was worth it. Food, snacks and beverages onboard was quite cheap, also got a nice window seat with a view over the beautiful alpine landscape in Austria. Had I taken the cheapest fare by Austrian or even Swiss, I'd have no otjrr choice than a 2 hr long stopover in either Vienna or Zürich and it would have costed more than €70 for a one way tivket + I would have had to pay additionally for the cab fare from the hotel to the airport and vice versa, whereas it only took me a minute to walk with my bags to Milano Centrale from the hotel lobby and board the train
Took ten minutes to get home from Hauptbahnhof by taking the bus one stop to my apartment in Central Munich.
Also, cheapest one way air-fare Rome - Milano by Alitalia would have costed me €80 + additional cab fare costs whereas taking the Italo high speed train from Termini to Milano C only cost me €40 in total one way and while slightly longer in duration by 1.5 hours was a lot quicker in the sense that it goes directly to the Central Station.
