I hate wearing my helmet but I will wear one if I'm going on fast moving roads. I used to never wear one but I've started being scared. Even though it would likely not do much to help me.

No but it will save you in cases of falling after losing control of the bike. OTB, puncture-into-curb, potholes, failing to ride down stairs etc.

Snowboard helmet is pretty mandatory for winter riding. You need a warm and windproof hat anyway, there's no reason for it not to be magical as well. In summer I sometimes do and sometimes don't.

Riding MTB I always wear a helmet cause I like to have fun and jump around. Saved my life twice already.

When I'm just going a to b on my road bike I almost never wear a helmet unless the roads are icy or slippery from rain. Never had a crash with it before but I don't feel like taking chances.

Honestly I haven't even thought about helmets in a really long time. I never wear one, and I kind of just ignore them in photos I guess.
I guess presently all my riding is pretty tame. Mostly rural dirt roads and I'm not going particularly fast.
But even when I was riding around city streets like a maniac I never wore one. Sure it might be a dumb thing to do but it's also my own risk to take.

Helmet prevented me being a vegetable.

1. Fork crown snapped sending me headfirst into road:. KO'd 45minutes, 2days hospital. Helmet destroyed.
2. Tree across trail on fast sweeping right turn at night, overhead the handlebars, front wheel smashed: KO'd less a than minute, helmet collapsed against proturding rock, stitches for minor head gouge. Helmet destroyed
3. Tree root grabbed bike at 30km/h. Over handlebars and into tree trunk headfirst. Crushed helmet top, slight headache. Full face helmet destroyed.
4. Urban riding and didn;t see low branch in park. Front impact then rear impact from landing on my back. KO'd about 10mins. Hospital overnight. Helmet destroyed.

UNDERSTAND NOW?

Helmet destroyed... not my brain.

Bikes are relatively slow and highly maneuverable and very easy to stop safely (under commuting conditions which is largely what the helmet question concerns) and have virtually no blind spots unless very inflexible. Promoting helmets in a population always diminishes the number of cyclists on the road, especially normal people cyclists.

I actually own two motorbikes at the moment. KTM 525 EXC and a citybike, Honda VTR-250 which both I have no accidents with even putting 145,000 km on the citybike and it still going strong.

Neither choice impacts the other much at all beyond looks, and even if you actively judge randos by that, it's not as if most people are particularly attractive, helmet-or-not.

Barely anyone here is even arguing about the helmet's efficacy of protecting the head. Isn't 100%, could still get crippled/dead from a crash another way, but that's reducing the whole concept of harm reduction into an all-or-nothing deal.
Practically, the individual choice boils down to:
>How inconvenient you find helmets.
>How effective you believe helmets to be at harm reduction.
>Whether or not you believe the harm reduction to be a worth that inconvenience.
If you don't think you're going to crash, or crash in such a way that would cause significant brain damage, the only reason you'd ever wear a helmet is if you actually found it more enjoyable than wearing none at all.

Is going down a steep hill on a road bike and getting launched off at, say, ~35mph fundamentally different from getting launched off a motorbike at the same speed?

If your vector of motion is significantly different, wouldn't you only be receiving a small amount of energy from the vehicle underneath you?

common sense is telling me that your body flying at 35mph is your body flying at 35mph regardless of the mode of transport but I don't know enough physics to know if I'm right. It's not like the momentum of the extra mass of the motorcycle is attached to you once you're launched off the bike. Maybe the numbers would be different if we consider crashing while under heavy acceleration vs non acceleration but both crashes happen at the same speeds, would it be different?
