>>1567292In 50 years, bicycles will be even more starkly divided between "Road", "Mountain", and "Utility" models. On the road side, once the UCI lifts it's backwards rules on competition bicycles, they will be fully faired and recumbent, the technically optimal technology. However, nothing else will change.
The mountain bike of the future will remain upright for maneuverability, but feature a myriad of cockpit controls such as on-the-fly adjustable suspension, geometry, and tire pressure adjustments. The suspensions will no longer be discrete elements on the front fork and rear triangle, but will be integrated into the frame of a tensile network with rigid elements that can be adjusted in infinite ways depending on rider preference and ground conditions.
The utility bike of the future will also remain upright for safety on roads, but feature built-in frame and wheel locks, belt + enclosed gear-driven transmission for speed changes, and a frame with built-in lockable storage trunks.
In 100 years, due to extreme rubber shortages and an abundance of steel, all road cycling will take place on steel monorails, with bicycles stabilized by gyroscope.
