The only part where road bikes are a bit scary is the brakes, they're just not up to it. But that's true ON the road as well if you go anywhere near hills.

It's either mountain, "hybrid" (shit) or road. However, from looking at photos, my 15-year-old road bike probably resembles what you'd call a "gravel".
