Any believers in Hyperloop here? Didn’t see a thread about it.
Musk is finally putting humans in the testing and doing 100mph tests.

I’d prefer rail over hyperloop in >90% of routes but I think this has potential for the inland West where distances between cities are long.

Btw if you think Hyperloop is completely stupid please elaborate why because I don’t know the technical specifics.

They always had to get to that point if they were ever going to hope to sell it (and I'm happy to see it hasn't died as a project yet). It's still at the level of a tech demonstrator, but at least it is an advanced one of those. This will help them raise more investor money.
Assuming it works out, the next step is a commercial demonstrator (building a route between two cities and actually selling rides on the service) so that investors can work out what return they'll get and what routes are actually affordable. Yes, there's a bunch of projections, but they don't really mean too much; a practical demonstrator is vital.
The commercial demonstrator is the key to getting actual construction contracts from real customers.

Hype Loop is and always has been a solution in search of a problem. The USA doesn't need vacuum trains--it already has airport infrastructure. Hype Loop, much like most other Musk projects, has always been a scheme to milk subsidies. A way for the rich to get richer. Musk just shit it out as a dumb idea and then realized that Space X and Tesla were already making enough money and then gave up on it--leaving others to work with the scraps left behind.

People who are convinced that the hyperloop is viable know that the tanks from these implosion videos are thin walled tubes made to withstand a small internal overpressure. They're not designed to handle one atmosphere of external overpressure. Because they are well engineered, they fail under such a load. If they withstood it, they would have been over engineered, adding cost and weight to the tanks.

It's a trivial engineering task to dimension a tube able to withstand one atmosphere of external overpressure, even when dented. If it was impossible, no submarine could go deeper than about 10 meters below the surface. This is the reason why you have never seen an actual engineer do the calculations on why the hyperloop tube as specified in Musk's white paper on the subject would collapse under vacuum in the "Hyperloop BUSTED" videos you've seen on Youtube.

Stick to actual arguments, or you're just batting for the other team. People who believe in the hyperloop concept see this bullshit as straw clutching by cognitively dissonant nay-sayers.

About five years ago there was a competition between different university-based groups about a hyperloop would work. The "winner" was a group from MIT, which was the only one who only showed the mechanism itself, not how it would handle people inside.

I'd contact a mechanical engineer and have him figure out the forces involved and and dimension the tube to withstand them. Look, it's a trivial task for a competent engineer. I know this not because I can do it myself, but because I've seen what competent engineers can do. Now, absence of evidence isn’t always evidence in itself, but I can’t help but notice that no qualified (or unqualified) engineer have demonstrated mathematically that a tube as proposed in the “white paper” would easily collapse, or made a simulation in Inventor or Solidworks or the likes, even though that would be a pretty strong card for the Musk-haters. And by golly do these people hate Musk.

This video https://youtu.be/kM-k1zofs58 shows how difficult it is to collapse a tube made from steel 25% thinner than what was proposed in Musk’s white paper, and not at all designed to handle exterior pressure.

Reinforcement rings, which already comes with it in the form of pipe connection flanges, would keep a dent from causing a propagating collapse, much like the thicker threads in rip-stop fabric.

I just don’t have access to the relevant data: Annual downpayment on cost of construction, longevity, power consumption, maintenance etc., versus passenger capacity, how much would people be willing to pay for a ticket etc. If the latter isn’t significantly higher than the former, then it’s not feasible. Again, I have yet to see a nay-sayer make a serious attempt at this calculation.

Yep, that’s one way it could go very bad, but how likely is it? Derailments are usually caused by:

Too much speed through a too tight a curve — Likely won’t be a problem for the hyperloop if the tube is graded for its maximum speed along its entire length, which I believe is the plan.
Debris on the track — If it’s difficult for an air molecule to find its way into the tube, then any debris capable of derailing a pod will have that much harder.
Mechanical failure of a track component (for example broken rails, gauge spread due to sleeper (tie) failure) — Yep, this could happen, but remember that any such failure caused by weather or force from any source other than the train itself will, inside a vacuous tube, be eliminated from the equation versus regular trains.
Mechanical failure of a component of the running gear of a vehicle (for example axlebox failure, wheel breakage) — Yep, especially due to the high speeds involved, and maybe vacuum induced cold-welding could be a problem, as well as heat dissipation issues (no natural air cooling of components).
Other causes — Sure, but many of them are probably substantially less likely to occur in a protected environment like inside a hypertube.

This is probably waaaay less likely than you imagine. Remember that even at 600mph, the relative speed between the tube wall and the pod is actually (radially) near zero. In the event of a catastrophic derailment, all the debris from the pod (and the teeth and gizzards of its passengers) will collide with the tube at very shallow angles, and it takes a lot to punch through an inch of steel even at 90°. Youtube is full of rednecks demonstrating what it takes to punch through that shit. It takes a lot.

Yes engineers can do phenomenal things, but we are talking about doing something unprecedented. Just as you are not saying it is doable, I'm not saying this is impossible. But this is an enormous undertaking and certainly non-trivial.

I wouldnt characterize myself as a nay sayer so much as I would call myself a skeptic, but heres a back of the envelope calculation that is way over simplified, but its something.
Budget of proposed high speed rail between SF-LA ~ $80e9
An absolutely assblasting ticket price ~$300

This would take ~300,000,000 passengers to break even, not accounting for recurring costs.
Maybe that's doable, but about 800,000,000 US domestic passengers in 2018 and with much greater limits on endpoints I would guess the rate would be very significantly lower.

This is based on a high speed rail budget which doesnt have to employ countless vacuum pumps and ground breaking technological innovations. But I think its at least gracious lower limit to the cost of construction.

Good point. I wasnt thinking about the shallow incidence angle and I probably shouldnt have said breech. But even then having a 600 mph projectile hit the walls at a glancing angle is going to transfer a large amount of energy to the walls this ultimately means damage and deformation, even without puncturing there would likely be significant denting and scraping etc which could significantly compromise the tubes ability to withstand the pressure differential and even if collapses can be localized, that would still be a huge problem.

Good point, but even if we say that there is a low probability the results of such a catastrophe could be a massive clusterfuck.
Lets say you are right that a derailment at 600 mph doesnt rupture the tube, well youve still got a horrible incident and a damaged pod inside a vacuum chamber. This means that any survivors of such an impact need to be evacuated from the tube. I would guess that there are plans for regular entry points to the tube (with accompanying leaks) but then either the tube would still need to be re-pressurized to allow emergency workers inside which will certainly be a slow process (at least it better not be a rapid re-pressurization) maybe sped up by some sort of segmentation of the tube, or you would need some means by which emergency workers can enter a pressurized vehicle to go through the tube and at best couple to an undamaged pod to allow passengers to leave or at worst somehow pick through any debris in this tube to gather the remains of asphyxiated passengers.

I’m not sure who’s in charge of that project, but if the government is heavily involved with the funding side of it, then yeah, it’s not going to be worth it. That goes for hyperloop too. Only chance it has of being economically defendable is if it’s almost exclusively privately funded. If that’s not possible, then it’s not possible. Simple as that.

Here’s the basic contingency plan:
Incident detected by system (pod crash, section collapse or breach/leak).
All pods downstream of incident proceeds to their destination.
All pods upstream of damaged pod immediately hit emergency brakes and, depending on location of crash, proceed or revert to nearest emergency breach or back to the airlock.
If pod crash or significant leak/breach, emergency repressurization valves all along the length of the tube blows open to quickly and evenly repressurize the entire tube (to avoid “air gun effect”).
Rapid response team helicopter to the affected area.

Now, this is not a trivial event, it would be a big deal. My issue with particularly Thunderf00t on this is that he’s talking as if 1) everyone in the tube will be inevitably reduced to “chunky salsa” (his words) at the tiniest leak or minor incident and that those who don’t will asphyxiate with no hope of rescue, and 2) that people aren’t reduced to “chunky salsa” or die from asphyxiation all the fucking time when travelling by car, plane, train or boat.

Rapid repressurization is not an issue as long as it happens evenly across the tube’s entire length. Again, it will be a big deal if this happens, but if the frequency of such incidents is sufficiently low, we won’t care any more than when an airplane crashes somewhere. “Oh no, that’s so sad… What’s for dinner?”
