According to my amateur understanding, other than the official languages of English, there are two main language groups, one is Hindu and such in the northern part, and another are those like Tamil and Malayalam in the South. They formed not all but vast majority of those hundreds of language in India and many different languages in each of the two groups are just as different from each other as Spanish and Portuguese.
