How would you connect sub-Saharan Africa?

America went with the federal road network & China went with high speed rail.

I think that if funding is not an issue (which it is, unfortunately) surely HSR is the obvious choice? Improving local rail networks around major population centres such as Addis Ababa or Lagos would provide more benefit in the short-term, though.

HSR would be highly unrealistic at least for now in Africa, there is one exception though in West Africa. A HSR route from Abidjan-Lagos would be roughly 14 billion for 300 miles and would connect 5 countries (Ivory coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria)

I think an American system would work for Africa, a massive road network for passengers and freight trains for cargo.

China has loads of federal highways. Only recently have they been building out a ton of high-speed rail cause they realized having loads of highways isn’t useful and is a big money pit.

like i know this is privileged as fuck to say, but, just as a thought experiment, imagine if we guillotined jeff bezos in minecraft & gave all his money to africa. i love to imagine how they could build up a mass transit system from scratch, knowing what we know today about the ups and downs of various methods, without existing infrastructure to work around, etc. like imagine what kind of movies they'd make with Hollywood money, it'd be wild and i'm sad that it'll never happen

Lmao africa is getting billions of dollars of investment right now from Silicon Valley bezos types who are fed up with western governments cucking out to the UN. So le evil billionaires are the ones actually dumping money into Africa and betting on its future right now, while trying to shape its growth to fit their model of an ideal society. When a highway becomes overcrowded it stops being useful because it didn’t make people’s trips faster. But sadly in America there’s little transit infrastructure and things are too spread out to walk/bike so they force people into congested highways.
It’s a scam to funnel money to oil companies.
