as long as the bike you pick is sold at a bike shop and not at walmart, it's going to be pretty much worth the price tag. Bikes are incredibly low tech commodities with so many competing brands that no company can afford to seriously fall behind.

That said, the big brands enjoy brand recognition and do charge a little more for that. If you are ever interested in selling a bike, getting one from a name brand (trek, specialized, etc) can help you sell it more easily. On the flip side, if you are buying a used bike, buying one from a "disgraced" brand (ie. diamondback, mongoose, schwinn) or small-time brand can save you money.
