Fucking why? Seriously it's like every north american city is legally required to build at least one overhead wire energized LRT with some universal vaguely european aesthetic. Does no one build cool shit like heavy rail subways anymore?

Where I live people own cars. "Public transport" basically means an awful bus service that no one uses and a 2 mile bike lane downtown going from nowhere to nowhere that was only built in the first place to qualify for some free Obamabux.

I really wish that domestic LRV design didn’t stop dead in the early 1940s. The next generation of "Jet Age" styled interurbans and streetcars would have been based.

Those Toronto cars look pretty nice for modern LRVs, and the PCC will always be the GOAT, but I still wish that the latter had gotten a proper successor in the 1950s or 1960s. It just sucks that such a great era for industrial design also happened to coincide with the absolute nadir of public transit in the U.S.

Is it something to do with political lifecycle? LTR systems are faster and cheaper to install, so they can be completed in a smaller number of re-elections, as oppose to heavy which is much riskier for industrial politicians?

You dont need heavy rail. Light rail is fine, as long as it's grade separated. I don't understand why Americans don't do this. Canada has built tons of grade separated light/medium rail and they top the continent on usage at a per capita level. Hell, even having a separated right of way works for the most part. they did that in philly for RT-15. a company got some old PCC's and tore their internals out and replaced then with brand new ones and refurbished the shell of it. Its for all intents and purposes a brand new PCC

in the final years of their service I got to commute on them for quite a few weeks, it was great as an autist but really the new streetcars are a lot better and actually wheelchair accessible, CLRV roofs leaked sometimes too
