why are aircraft not rectangular? cargo is all packed into rectangular packaging, round bodies waste space, wouldn't rectangular bodies make more sense

okay I know all (forward and backwards alike) swept wings are useless on propeller aircraft but I can't help it because I'm addicted to reducing parasitic drag so here's a double cylindrical wing. the propellers are inside the loop as are the control surfaces that also hold up the engine (does this count as wing-mounted empennage? or maybe it can be an X tail who knows)

anyways, this is a joke. I just had the idea for the weird inverted aircraft fuselage and needed a justification for it.

If you want to take it seriously, you could try to combine wings, control surfaces and ducts for propellers into one thing, an improvement to box-wings.
You would have to model it, test it on CFD, tune and test it a lot, make a RC aircraft model, ...

I guess that I have the time to waste during covid. I'm not exactly sure how to place the engines tho. the reason for having the control surfaces inside the cylindrical wing was because I want the wing to also act as a ducted fan, placing them both (elevator and rudder) inside the wing to support said fan seems simple enough.

The issue is that this is essentially a glorified two engine biplane and my only plane knowledge comes from my curiosity on the internet and my addiction with making things look aero. but thanks for the hobby idea !!

The primary issue with square airplanes is that you cannot easily pressurize a box, the pressure causes the sides to bulge out. This is the same reason why you don’t see square soda bottles.

There are indeed square airplanes, but they are unpressurized. This example is caused a Sherpa and is still used by the US forest service to airdrop firefighters.

Real answer, since you haven’t gotten one yet.

The primary issue with square airplanes is that you cannot efficiently pressurize a box shape, as the internal pressure causes the sides of the box to bulge out. This is the same reason why you don’t see square soda bottles.

If you don’t pressurize an airplane, it can’t fly as high without risking damage to the cargo. Flying low increases drag, and therefore increases flight times and fuel costs.

There are definitely square airplanes, but they are to my knowledge all unpressurized. The photo is a Shorts Sherpa, they’re still used by the US forest service to airdrop firefighters.

Some people were throwing a temper tantrum about this (large wings with passengers inside of it), but I saw a boat who used the same idea for aerodynamic lift and it worked.
