Find a place inside, just lean it on a wall or put it behind a couch or something. It's also much more likely to be stolen if it's outside or even in a shed or something. Unless you mean like some Walmart "road bike" then just leave it outside and hope someone steals it so you can justify buying a real bike.

My leg was broken recently and I can almost get back on the bike.

My bike has been sitting disassembled in the garage for a month and a half. Anything special I need to do to get it ready to ride again? I plan on just giving it a light cleaning and maybe re-lubing the chain.

I'm ready to bite the bullet and buy a quality mini-pump and a light set. Some features I'm looking for:
-minipump
>both presta and schrader compatible
>well built, sturdy
>as small as possible (not too worried about taking a long time to pump or not reaching high pressures)
>with a little hose that attaches to the valve (instead of directly attaching the pump itself to it)
-lights
>red and white obviously
>low battery indicator
>USB charge
>a mounting mechanism that either doesn't break (has happened to me on lezyne and cateye lights) or snap (most silicon/rubberband systems)
>doesn't need to be ridiculously bright, I'm not looking to light up the road, just to be seen)

I have a Serfas MP-7 that I quite like. As for lights, consider something that's a step or two up from what you consider "good enough" and run it at a lower power. I have the 1300 lumen Bontrager headlight that does like 6 hours on the low setting. Though, the "low" is still 400 lumen, brighter than most people's headlights. I really only use the bright setting for the rare roadside repair.

one thing these can blow over in a major storm and get ripped. they usually have some kind of stabilizing hook+screw at the top but i didn't have a mounting option

I recommend a quality headlap and/or a cheap flashlight mount for your (quality) flashlight.
I don't really see the need for specialized bicycle headlights unless they have a dynamo or something.
Good rear lights are a dime a dozen and you can find really nice chinkshit ones on AliX. I personally have been using a Serfas Thunderbolt for many years, never had a problem with the silicone bands.

It's quite low powered and has a reputable battery meaning a charge will last probably the longest of anything you might get. and it's got that great stvso beam pattern. and it's a more integrated into your bike type so more secure.

if not i'd still recommend german lights, just ones that mount on your handlebars. The quality is high and the beam pattern is just really nice.

Are 23s worth getting? I’m on 32 panaracers right now because I fell for the gravel meme but since 99.9% of my riding is on pavement I think I want to switch to the Conti gp5k but can’t decide if I want 23 or if I should stick to the 25 which is what I had before. I’m not doing 28; the roads here are very smooth

25s are rated for the same max pressure as the 23s, if you run them at the same pressure the 25s will have lower rolling resistance, gp 5000 aren't oversized like most older tires so you can go up to 25 without having them balloon up to 27+, the aero and weight difference between 23 and 25 is small enough to cope with, keep in mind the optimal tire pressure is said to be when it's just low enough that you can't feel road buzz and 25s can go down to 95 psi while the 23s have a narrower pressure range of 110-123 psi, 23s might fit better on your rims though if they're narrower older/entry level rims

Fatter tires at the same pressure ride harder. Tires inflated to the same comfort level have approximately the same rolling resistance.

Source: my ass, no really bicycle tire rolling resistance or whatever has an article on this and they even use contis for comparison

P.S. 130 psi tires actually do roll fast, Jan Heine proved this in a test he did. His "optimal" lower pressure had similar rolling resistance to rock hard tires but with more comfort, but that lower rolling resistance relies on the rough road Jan likes to test and it varies based on road and rider. So on medium rough roads rock hard times and "optimal" pressure tires have similar rolling resistance. On smooth roads and on the track, there's almost no suspension losses, so rock hard is faster. There's a reason pros used to have rock hard tires. It turns out it's actually just consistently fast across medium to smooth road conditions and they only used fat low pressure tires on the cobbles where it really made a difference.

Jan's point really should be that on medium/rough road conditions you don't have to give up rolling resistance for comfort if you find out exactly what pressure gives you low rolling resistance with a power meter.

yes but some anons have taken it to heart and consider 28mm to be the minimum that should be used on the road and they use pressures well below the manufacturer's suggestion, even in your post you can see how most road cyclists have been pressured into considering 25+ mm to be the sensible choice in real world conditions when not too long ago it was common to use 23mm and road bikes came fitted with 23mm by default

rim profiles grew wider and sizes became largely more literal. In large part it's a nothing change driven by the false change conspiracy the bike industry has to push to make itself seem innovative. I suspect the making 25s actually 25mm and saying they're the new hot thing which is bigger tyres even when they aren't even bigger than the old 23s that everyone used to ride which were actually 25s must have been a scheme of the bicycle industry for a long time that they kept in their pocket for a period of stagnation. Very clever really, but not everyone turned a blind eye to this long game of duplicity.

Peak brake came in 30 years ago. 30 years. Classic bend drops aren't bad either. They are just a different method of bike fitting and geometry. There's no real advantage to the new way.

no, he's right, the roads in bongistan are categorically more shit than most other (((developed))) countries. not because they're badly maintained (although most of them are), but they use coarser gravel in the surface. nearly all non-artery roads are actual tarmacadam, as in a layer of tar with stones sprayed on top, not "tarmac" (actually asphalt).

If you just want to be seen, you can't beat wheel spoke lights-- they are extremely conspicuous. I've never used them myself, so pic related is just what I found when I looked for USB chargeable options.

Personally, I would look at the options from bikelightdatabase or outdoorgearlab and look at the company product pages to see what battery life you can get on the lower power pulse modes. This way, you would get the flexibility of having a light that actually works for illuminating roads when you need it, for just a little more money.

road cycling is the most popular in english speaking countries and a couple of other european countries, but especially in britain and amerishart as well with burger anons claiming to have lots of potholes etc, so a lot of the discussion is from their point of view, so anons who shill 28mm tires might not realize that other people have smoother roads to ride on so they can easily get away with 25mm tires. and there is a lot of truth to the idea that velodrome tracks are smoother than roads and you just haven't noticed how rough the road surface actually is if you think otherwise.

Make sure the shifters and brakes are ok, then check for play and excess wear in the headset, wheel bearings, BB and derailleur pivots.

Factor in the cost of new chain, cables/outers, tyres, a rattle can respray maybe, and probably a saddle and you should be good to go.

If the wheels are otherwise ok, you can clean the spoke rust by spraying them with some dubya D and giving the the old "how's your father" with some #0000 steel wool.

It's not a good frame. Good steel frames have integrated derailer hangers. The claw tells you it's gaspipe.
It's also had a sketchy repair done to the seatclamp area so that might be totally fucked and not adjust.
the parts in general are pretty shit
the v-brake conversion is good i guess.

it's a cheap bike, beaten the shit out of, and just maybe with bearings that have had attention. But it's not your bombproof beater and it's not a good example of itself.
I hope it's less than $100

How many kgs of fucking locks am I suppose to take with myself? Like I might get a way with a u-lock + something else sometimes, but as a whole I think I will need 3 locks to properly lock everything (of course all coming together at the u-lock), especially of because how the parking spaces often work.
Maybe I am too paranoid, especially for someone living in Japan, but still. It would probably be more than 2kg at all time either on the bike or in my backpack. And then also a small toolkit for on the road fixes. So much shit trying to take the fun away.

Why do you need 7000 series? FSA Energy is 7050, but heavier and more expensive than UNO 6061 bars. The FSA bars have much nicer ergonomics, but the UNO is good enough and cheap. I prefer FSA compact over all other brands because of the angle of the ramps, the flare and the long drops. UNO is a basic non-flared compact bar. These are my two go-to bars in 38cm, and the material has never been a factor in choosing. Only price, weight and ergonomics.

Mini-U lock, locked with the "Sheldon brown method" is basically the perfect option. they're not super heavy. in high crime areas you can use a front cable lock.
of course you would have hex locking axles and a visibly non-stock bike

Not all pros use 25. It's just that 25 is now common when it used to be all 23. The trick with wider tires is not really that they're faster (they are technically faster at the same pressure, but they also have less give at the same pressure) but that you can get noticeably better comfort with negligible or no power loss if you tune your optimal pressure for a given road condition with a power meter.

Basically going to 25s is because power meters happened. Hard 23s are consistently fast on most road conditions, but also uncomfortable. 25s can be just as fast but more comfortable on the medium and rough road surfaces if you find the goldilocks pressure for you, your bike and the road conditions.

Pretty much, 23s usually do have lower rolling resistance but that doesn't always translate to faster times. As >>1578589 said, a goldielocks balance must be found. The ideal balance is difficult to achieve though, there's a lot of factors to consider and each condition can vary rider to rider and can differ slightly on every ride.

while you can surely wrap a measuring tape around your head at home, it's won't give you a sense of whether the front obstructs your vision, ear clearance is good (aero helmets), and most importantly, that it doesn't make you look like a mushroom.

My Campagnolo Chorus 10-speed shifter only gets soft when upshifting from the hardest to the second-hardest cog, resulting in missed shifts. Downshifts work just fine.

Is it a problem with the g-springs and spring carrier, or perhaps another component such as the ratchet?

Nah I'll just buy a Medium and have a tight fit. I only intend to wear a helmet the 10% of the time I'm riding fast downhill, or on the road. 90% of my cycling is slow or uphill, no helmet required.

another way to check is assuming the max chainring size .eg 48 x 12.7 = 609.6 / 3.141 = 194.078 mm
x2 = 388.156 + 25.4 = 413.556 = 16.28173228 inches

26 inch mtb of the time period tend towards 19 inches because of the way the top tube slopes

The Lauf Grit would work. You only get 30mm of travel but your geometry won't get fucked up. You still won't be able to do more than a mild blue XC trail tho. Something like a Suntour Epixon 9 LO R or Fox 32 could work, maybe, but I don't think you'd like it because of how it would affect geo. Just get a nice new trail hardtail, sell the gravelmeme, and get a proper road bike if you still feel like doing road rides.

depends on your tires, terrain, air pressure, and riding habits. I almost never get flats anymore, just gotta pay attention to where the fuck you're riding through. Of course there's always the odd invisible shard that gets through once a year or so.

very rarely if you have proper tires and inner tubes, install them correctly without pinching the tubes, keep them inflated, and avoid running over debris, potholes and curbs. check the tread wear indicator on your tires, cheap tires might start having poor puncture protection after 1000-2000 km or so, better tires might last longer.

Now, most likely. A shop will have a chain wear checker thingee to measure wear or you can buy one for like $10.

Depends mostly on tyre pressure. Too low is better than too high for puncture protection.
Always carry a spare tube and tyre levers with you in a saddle bag/sealant and a valve core tool if you run tubs.

Thanks for the help /n/, it was a broken g-spring carrier.

So if anyone's ergopower shifter has similar symptoms hope this helps. Sloppy shifting is likely to be the spring-group. The ratchet is hardened steel and too durable to wear out from 2008 until now.

If you get used bikes and harvest parts, it's pretty cheap. And a lot of parts have great resale value of you decide to get rid of them. Ebay is a fucking hassle if your life is busy, but you can get 75% of your money back at times. So $400 with of parts bought will either last decades*or* be able to be resold for $300. So it's not that expensive of your willing to take the time to resell stuff. Having two bikes allows you to fiddle with one while still having a working bike too

Mini pumps are to carry with you for emergencies, using one for everyday inflation is a terrible idea. How much air a pump can add at once is basically determined by its volume, so to add the same amount of air as a floor pump you'd need to pump the mini one dozens of times. Lay your tire over so that the sealant sits there overnight. It should plug it. Make sure you have plenty of sealant in the tire.

Also, don't be afraid to plug it if that doesn't fix it.

The road morph is definitely worth getting, I've had one for 5-6 years now I think, they're great, though the o-rings inside do need to be replaced every couple of years. I've used plenty of smaller pumps too and they suck - it's not just a matter of 2 minutes, it's usually more than that and if you have road tires it's miserable trying to get them up to your optimal riding pressure with a small pump - sometimes you just can't and have to settle for riding home carefully and slowly on underinflated tires.

I only have a tiny handpump and I ride 2" tires, not a pain at all. To be honest, 2 minutes is longer than I've ever spent pumping my tires from flat. Though to be fair, I never need to go beyond 60psi.

I'm facing a daily rider/commuter/tourer bike tyre replacement problem soon, since the old ones I use look more and more worn out. Sure, I already clocked over 18,5k km on them with no problem, but already had to reinforce a spot that got slashed pretty badly some time ago, since the tube started bulging out.
The oldies are Vera City Wide 32c (more like 35mm wide tho) on Vera Terra 19mm rims - set that came stock on the Fuji Touring bike.
I wish to not get wider than the 32c size, since I went out and fit mudguards that are already too narrow, so having the tyre wider would only leave me with muddy shins. Also, the Vera's have an "anti puncture" thingy and it works well, so I was looking into others with it too.
Riding crappy pavements, shitty tarmacs and, rarely, dirt roads.
Thought about (from cheaper to more expensive):

Bontrager H2 Hard Case Lite
Schwalbe Marathon (Green guard)
Vredestein Dynamic Tour

I tested Marathon Pluses back in the day and they were indestructible, but I never felt confident on them (partially because of the tyres themselves and partially because of the bike) and also they come a tit too expensive for my current budget.
What would /n/ advise?

On a side note, how do I know the rims (wheels) need replacement already? The afromentioned Vera Terra rim brake rims run the same distance as the tyres, yet I believe a tyre would "go out" sooner than the rim, innit.

Puncture proof tyres go on the bike that needs to be ready to go day-in day-out.

Yeah, tyres are important, I agree, but there are some other things I have to get for the bikes and it leaves me with only that much money to spend on tyres.
I am not particularly fast or complaining about the comfort (seriously, how comfortable can tyres this narrow be anyway), so why would I shell out for the top tier tyres like that.
I'm very happy with the Veras and already upgraded to a tier or two above them with the ones I mentioned in the first post what more can a mad do (except for paying a fortune for the top of the line tyres)?

The Vera Citywide tires are unicorns. They are incredibly plush and cheap. I've only come across them recently on a used bike.
The current Fuji Touring cones with Vittoria randoneurs which are probably slower than even marathon plus.
I think you're basically stuck. Buying tires is a guessing game and Vera Citywide isn't available. Panaracet Paselas are probably the closest common equivalent, but you might not agree

can you explain this more deeply? My first road bike had traditional bend and Ive found it tremendously uncomfortable in all positions compared to modern bike with STI hoods and compact bend or whatever its called.

I do run 600tricolour as well, but calipers are 6400 single pivit, very reliable but I might switch to dual 6403 on front since Im not that happy with strenght. Overall 6400 is wonderfully made group. They dont make them as...

The brakes aren't great and I did bleed them, levers move a lot before gripping, might change the brakes. Also I need to change the stem, to move my hands further forward & lower

Bike weighs 8.5kg, I could get it down nearly to 8kg with titanium spokes & thinner tyres, dunno if carbon cranks are unwise

At the start of the build I was trying to use some budget parts. This worked fine for the AdventX drivetrain which is great and lightweight, maybe not so well with the brakes. The main disadvantage I can see is no bleed valve which would help to get air out of the line, the brakes just have bleed ports and that's it.

One of the ultrapoorfags i know who does basic maintenance and leadouts for used tubes, tires, and first pick on salvaged crashes got the Aldi's one for 35 US, or more specifically as a bonus for getting a dentist onto the KOM scoreboard. Corners cut everywhere but it gets the job done.

Cantis um no real advice but, for some rambling: I bought some 270s the other day and they don't fit on the sport tourer i got them for. Seem quality though and they look cool. I have some shimano cx70s. pretty good. don't love them though. they don't look cool either. honestly the ones i like the most that i've used are just 90s deore with kool stop pads.
Pic related are rusted out v-brakes i stole off an abandoned BSO on the side of the road lol. work good. I suggest that.

I think the carbon handlebar helps soak up some of the bumps. The bike is fast on the flat due to the 38T chainring, the bike exceeds my leg power to ride flat out. My old bike was shit and I never felt the need to wear a helmet, but with this bike it feels a bit lairy & risky not to wear one.

I still getting used the the 29" wheels. My old bike was 26". 27.5" may have been a better balance, or have a 29/27.5 mullet. 29" rides over obstacles very easily but it is not very nimble, just wants to be in a straight line quickly and brute force through the terrain.

Question : Increasing travel on xc bike (anthem 2021 in this case), pros and cons?

Apparently travel of my recon silver rl fork can be increased from 100mm to 120mm by removing a spacer inside and it can be done in 10 minutes.
Im wondering should i do it though, as most manufacturers say that you shouldn't fiddle with travel.
I have a xl anthem, that is, fuckhuge reach of 470mm which is on larger side for me so i thought that increasing the travel would shorten it up a bit and give me a less streched out position on the bike. Also, being an xl frame i think that those 20mm won't affect the geometry as much as it would if it was large or medium. Suggestions?

XTR is bling. Plain ol Deore is all the brake you'll ever need unless you're doing some really fast technical trails, in which case TRP G-Specs are great. Hope Techs are nice but the TRP brakes offer the same modulation and power and use mineral oil instead of DOT shit. I'm not a big fan of the Servo Wave brake booster that Shimano has on SLX and above brakes.

i don't know exactly how, but the right knee is hurting when i pedal, and sometimes when i walk, it feels like needles on the right side of the knee, and sometimes it feels numb on the same part.
I'm putting ice and leaving a tight bandage around it when i sleep and walk around.
is there a way to heal faster? im dying to ride again but i'm afraid i may hurt myself for real.

the puncture protection is very good for a fast tyre, they just don't last that long and are prone to sidewall cuts. It's still reliable enough to use commuting and not really worry about flats. You just have to spend money replacing them more often.

You need to clean the rust off it before waxing it. Soaking it in gas is not good enough. If you don't want to get the surface rust off, use a wet lube instead.

RJ The bike guy made a video on it. Once you have the idea it's pretty straight forward. Black iron pipe, hinge, foam and pvc. Scrap wood for the base, literally just glued and nailed into a stable and heavy base.

Pain on outside of knee can mean your feet are too close together, meaning you'd want to adjust your cleats or get bigger pedals or whatever. Just as likely is you're simply overextending yourself beyond what your body is prepared for at the moment and/or have terrible form with your knees twisting all over the place as you pedal.

I took the pedals off my old shit road bike for the first time and the right crank arm threads are stripped to fuck. Tiagra 4700, Hollowtech II, can I slap on literally any replacement crankset from Shimano with matching chainrings?

they're bulky and awkward to get your feet into, fuck up your q factor or rub against your crank arms. if they were dirt cheap they might work as a temporary winter solution but they seem to cost like 20+ bucks if they weren't included with some shitty prebuilt fixie. so you might as well look at pinned mtb pedals or clipless pedals, some pedals cost like 20-40 bucks and some shoes cost less than 100 bucks and some spd shoes are very walkable and people say they wear them all day at work.

i should mention though that i have a black pair of pic related from gym class when i was a kid that are falling apart, they're very wide around the forefoot, if you have a more classic narrower pair of shoes they might work better

you havent used metal pinned mtb pedals havent you? Throw those pretty to look at Grant MKS pedals on something you dont relly on and put a cheap reliable mtb flat pedal on it. Smth like dmr v8 you can get for 20usd

does it really matter for braking feel if you use filament strapping tape to hold the cable housing to the bar? a roll of filament tape is stupidly expensive for such trivial single purpose use in my country and on german amazon. can i just do a couple of wraps of kapton tape and pull it snug to avoid further stretching? maybe muh grams saved by using kapton tape is more important than muh stiffness anyway. plenty of people just use vinyl electrical tape but maybe they're filthy casuals. with internally routed handlebars maybe the cables won't tend to move much anyway.

btw 2 layers of 20mm wide kapton tape for 2 wheels only came out to 10 grams. it was a pain in the ass to apply though since i'm a perfectionist. you should wear a headlamp so you can see what you're doing and so you can back off if you're getting bubbles or wrinkles especially on the second layer. the first layer is a bit easier since the air can escape through the pores of the anodized aluminium surface and the spoke holes.

and i'm not entirely convinced that the second layer is needed even for road tires if you take care to deburr all the spoke holes. people keep saying to use 2 layers on the forums but i haven't heard of any catastrophic failure with a single layer. but it does seem stiffer with the second layer so the indentations over the spoke holes will be insignificant so they won't mess with the consistency of the air volume or whatever.

What is considered freak of nature tier hemoglobin levels? What is the hemoglobin count of elite tier cyclist?

I donated blood a week ago and got results from my bloodwork. I measured 16.3g/dL which they considered higher than high but it doesn't seem to be freakishly high but I have no baseline numbers outside of the range for the average human. My blood tested the same 2 years ago when I went to the hospital and never noticed I had an abnormally high hemoglobin, PO2, SO2, and blood gas levels because I just skimmed the papers.

Give it to me straight Doc, am I just above average or an elite freak?
