looking to upgrade cranks on my road bike, currently have normal british threaded bb, do I stick with Shimano 105 (on there now) and Shimano bb or something different? Is there any point to Ultegra?

If you """Just ride""" and not training/racing then 105 or equivalent is fine, it's just a little heavier than something more expensive.
On the other hand Ultegra or Dura-Ace will shift smoother. But again if you're not racing then it really doesn't matter that much.
Feel free to use an Ultegra chain with your 105 components though, it's 100% compatible, only a few bucks more, and is a better quality chain.

like... if it's 9 speed 105, you should get a sora crank.
And the 'upgrade' really is what gearing you want.

Ultegra and 105 are the same mechanically and there is zero difference shifting
