They still count as ultra-light and even if they try to make a license be required it'd probably be a simple test. Also, I don't think it'd be an issue if you're flying in the middle of nowhere in the US.

That said, I have always had a thing for kites, so these things interest me. Is there any word on what's going to happen with the ADS-B mandate? What should one pack if flying one of these cross country?

As someone with a deeper understanding of aerodynamics and flight vehicle design I would never want to go paragliding or paramotoring. All it takes to fuck your shit up is a simple bit of turbulence/falling air and boooom canopy collapse.

I'll stick to actual ultralights and rigid wing hang gliders, thanks. The latter are also cheap, reliable and I believe fall into ultralights in the us but I'm not sure. Motorpacks for them are just as good and often better performing than paramotors. The unobstructed birds eye view is the cherry on top.

I used to fly kites (like kitesurfing but on land) and being just 10ft above the ground was enough to scare the shit out of me, I'll pass on hang gliding / paramotoring, despite how much fun it looks

also you can't exactly commute via paramotor lmao

I did paragliding for a bit - I'm not sure I ever saw a classic rigid wing hang glider.
Anyway, unrecoverable wing collapse with modern wings seems quite rare; the vast majority of deaths tend to come from collisions with terrain during launch and landing. The exception of course is the super high performance wings - fast and twitchy for acrobatics can also mean fast to collapse.

Some dude we would call the “fan man” would fly down our peninsula which was maybe 200 yard wide. Obviously he knew there was always a chance to go down because he only flew over water , and specifically when he came a few feet above the water in front of our restaurant I always though he would dump it.
