This is a cool idea. The city takes free on-street parking spaces and reserves them for car-sharing companies.
I think this would definitely work in Chicago. Maybe Atlanta too.

GIG car share does the same, and allows 1-way trips, you just park in the "home zone". It's pretty based and the prices are really competitive, even for super short or multi day trips

I'm sad car2go pulled out of Chicago, it was a convenient service I used often when I needed to haul things I can't on a bike. Parking was free and the little 1L turbo in a 1650lb body was peppy inside the city (but sucked on the highway). It was cheap too, $6/hr which included gas and everything. I hope another carshare company fills the gap between bike and train like car2go did

Close, it's one of those companies that *lost* tens of millions per year until getting bought out 7 years ago for $500M by a huge corporate conglomerate with enough actually-profitable businesses to subsidize it. Zipcar is basically the hourly version of Budget Rentacar. Instead of renting a Camry for $35/day, you can rent it for $8/hr instead.

I tried that for a couple of years and it sucked dick. I wound up just renting cars for entire days because I was never sure if I could finish whatever I needed the car for in an hour or two because of traffic or whatever, and it wasn't always easy to extend rental times. And forget about using it to take care of an emergency or an impromptu invite to a party. Basically it was very inconvenient compared to just being able to hop in my shitbox and go do whatever.

only on paper. the biggest/most successful change is the 14th street busway, but there's been no enforcement recently and traffic regular is shitting it up again. source: i ride it regularly and drove my personal vehicle across 14th st east to west without being diverted by traffic control. the bikes lanes are also a fucking joke. none of the new ones are protected, and there is no enforcement to keep people from parking in them.
