It was really close to having nailed the landing as well. Loss of header tank pressure starved the engines of fuel in the last few seconds. They have 8 more rockets plus the first booster in various stages of construction so they'll be flying again in a month anyway.

NASA shouldn't be in the business of designing rockets anymore. In addition to commercial cargo and crew, there should have been a commercial heavy lift program.

The SLS project is such a piece of bloated pork barrel political make work projects. 4 x $150 million engines thrown away each launch with a total cost of over $1 billion per launch. Then you have congress sabotaging the schedule of other NASA missions by forcing them to use SLS to funnel money to their states when several other in production rockets are capable of doing the job.

This. The SLS should have been a clean sheet design.
Methalox first stage with attachment points for booster stages, and LH2/LO2 upper stages.
And in addition to the heavy lift vehicle make a medium lift rocket that can carry the Orion into LEO
A whole SLS rocket for the crew vehicle is overkill

Maybe it would have made more sense for a dedicated refuelable Earth / Moon transfer vehicle that people dock with using Crew Dragon / Starliner. Though you would need to carry a bunch of fuel there and back for the earth insertion burn instead of just using reentry to brake.

You don’t need to ferry the crew vehicle to and from the moon.
Just plan the lunar injection burn to have a free return trajectory and separate the crew module(s) from the ferry.
The ferry will go round the moon and head back whilst the crew modules make a braking burn into lunar orbit.

Welded isogrid panels. Panels are machined from the solid block with 90% material turned into swarf.

When falcon tanks are made fro plain sheet and extruded profiles all welded together. Near 100% usage of material, much faster and cheaper production. SpaceX reinvented fuel tank (but barely anyone knows that because tanks are boooooring who wants to talk about them? engines steal all the glory and attention)

Spacex didn't invent Airware 2198 aluminum–lithium allow, they didn't invented friction stir wielding. The technology has existed to get people to Mars for decades if someone was willing to throw enough money at it. It would have likely taken at least as many launches as ISS construction to get all the necessary hardware, fuel and supplies in place.

SN10 got its nose cone yesterday, so there are 2 fully stacked rockets now. The lower part of SN11 is fully stacked and its nose cone is getting flaps installed, so it should be fully stacked by the end of next week.

They recently announced the booster isn't going to have landing legs. It will land on the launch pad, and be grabbed at the grid fin attachment points near the top of the rocket.

I was thinking it over and they probably just need 2 half rings that can be moved together around the core once the engines have descended past that point. That would also give them the option to swing the complicated expensive bits out of the way if the booster ends up having an engine failure and is coming in too hot in the last seconds. The arms the half-rings are attached to would need to be able to move the ring in the horizontal plane several meters (probably the ability to tilt a few degress as well) to keep the booster centered until it makes contact.

It will be a huge structure but that kind of tracking should be fairly straight forward.

Quite a few hiccups with SN9 lately due to scrubbed static fires, then damage to 2 engines requiring swap out and re-testing.

Launch SN10 at first opportunity.

The SpaceX engineering is modelled on the wartime method, much like the development of the V2. It's somewhat inefficient, like stepping on the gas in a car will make things go faster, but at a higher fuel to distance ratio, but goes way faster than regular NASA peacetime method, and the time saved could actually render it a cheaper method in the long run.

LabPadre has several cameras. They should have learned their less from last time and just picked a fixed place to point the camera. The remote control was too laggy during launch / flight and they ended up being out of frame and missing some stuff.

SN8 was closer in that the two relit engines provided enough thrust to do the flip correctly before they failed. SN9 only had one engine working, but it looked to me like that engine burned perfectly from relight until landing.

A lot of people are saying that debris flew out of the bottom skirt of SN9 either before or during the relight. My theory is that one of the two Raptors needed for landing malfunctioned either just before relight or when it shut down on ascent. We'll have to see what SpaceX, Elon, or other sources release in the coming days.

Maybe a launch this week. There is one more rocket of the current revision almost ready to go after that before they jump 4 serial numbers to SN15 which has some plumbing changes.

They painted a SpaceX logo on the landing pad yesterday so it should stick this one.

From what I understand the biggest thing Starship had to overcome in this recent test was the bellyflop-to-vertical-transition. The transitions in the earlier tests were iffy.

That DID work. But we can see even early on in the test that one of the engines was running fucked up. Yellow exhaust instead of clean.

Starship hit the pad too fast likely due to engine plumbing problems. As it's coming down you can see flame coming out the side which indicates some manner of plumbing fuckup.

At the same time, you can see that the landing legs failed to deploy. Only 3 of 6 swung out and locked. So not only did it land hard, not only was at least one of its engines and/or plumbing fucked up, the legs which are supposed to crush on impact weren't there to soak up the force of the impact, which damaged the plumbing further leading to the explosion.

But from a "Can this crazy bellyflop maneuver work?" perspective, it was a great test. Had the engines & plumbing not fucked up and had the landing legs deployed properly it would have been a 100% success.

SpaceX is basically doing what NASA used to do in the fifties. They test completely new stuff, so until they get it right, prototypes are expandable.
Also, have people already forgot the early days of the Falcon rocket? It took three tries to land on the pad, and four to land on a barge. After series of tests SpaceX managed to make it work and here we are in 2021, Falcon 9 is a massive success. This whole doomposting is just retarded.

First time was a different approach, they relit only two, one of them went out. This was a different approach and I suspect they left more fuel in the tanks as well to avoid aeration. Relighting all three, do the flip and burn off the bulk of the speed then only used one to land. You can see the three engine relight also moved the SN-10 further off from the center of the landing pad. Also tells a lot about the accuracy of their landing system, coming in dead centre and only having the change in the flip approach having an effect going off centre.
I say huge success, shame they couldn't inspect the engines afterwards. Needs better landing legs and more secure leg retainers. Scott Manley showed Labpadre's video where 3 of the legs secured and the rest were just dangling around.

He is using new x10 cheaper lauch cost internally within SpaceX himself without sharing it with market. Monopolism hell yeah. Why should he lower price to give chance competitors with another space internet? Build you own Falcon 9, bitches.

The plan was to use 2 engines to bleed off speed and land with one. They cranked up the throttle on the single engine last time but it failed to increase thrust. Next time they will use 2 engines during landing.

Well, right now they're burning money in Boca Chica like they are making a fucking lot of it, which I can only explain if their launches costs waaaay less (for SpaceX) than it does for the competition. Seconds stage is 9x smaller than first. 1 engine vs 9 and it weights proportionally less, cost is proportional to weight if same tech and falcon second stage is same tech. Just imagine you can send 15000kg to LEO with smol rocket with only one merlin and 4000 kg weight (empty)... SpaceX made such fantasy true for themselves

What about first stage? They got it for free from customers who buy launch with new stage.

Maybe ditching the helium pressurization and going back to autogenous (as that wasn't the cause of the first crash), along with switching to a 2 engine landing requires some engineer software tinkering.
