Should rim v brakes be able to lock the front wheel when braking hard?

I find that when im riding and suddenly brake hard my brakes will squeal pretty louadly but wont lock the front wheel ever and it will take like 1 meter to come to a stop

is this normal or do my brakes need adjusting?

You don’t want to lock your front wheel, and the good news is you probably can’t, even with a perfect brake setup, unless you were braking hard on a loose surface or ice. If your front wheel starts sliding you will probably go down. Anyway, it shouldn’t be squealing either. Try adjusting your brake pads to have more “toe-in” that means make them like a V shape, narrower toward the front of the wheel.

Stopping in 3 feet is pretty good actually. Locking the brakes means skidding and/or flying over the bars and eating pavement. Neither is ideal.

It's worth practicing this too. you'll do it if you ever have to emergency brake.

basically you should modulate front braking so your rear wheel doesn't quite lift, but it's worth practicing doing an actual stoppie so you know where that point is and won't panic if it does happen.

Also, don't use your rear brake, or, release it midway through braking before your rear wheel loses traction, or you will skid it and lose control

you should be able to easily lock both wheels with v, at least the way i set them up.
toe in your brake pads and use koolstop salmon pads. you can toe in with dimes but that's slightly too much imho.
also make sure your rims aren't glazed over with old burnt brake pads

Yes, but your handling is terrible, so don't do it.

They're probably good enough, especially if you're a tub of adipose tissue. Cleaning, adjusting, and replacing any worn parts is probably a good idea.
