Had this happen on a Calgary C-Train back in the mid-80's... driver was cracking off hilarious jokes. Made an otherwise boring ride quite enjoyable.

I've never heard of it either. Sometimes though, on Tri-Rail, the conductor (not the driver) will pronounce the names of the stops in the most hilarious way possible, though.
I have heard this joke a couple times from conductors, too:
>If you're looking to go south, you're on the wrong train!
Said at Miami Airport station, the southernmost Tri-Rail station.
