Rail makes up such a small percentage of travel as it is, and even if it was upgraded, a 200 mph train is way slower than a 600 mph plane so there’s no reason really. Maybe in like a European country, yeah, but not in the us.

Railfag here, I'm not one of those smoothbrains advocating for NY-LA nonstop HSR. That would be fucktarded. I'm advocating for ~200-500 mile corridors of rail as an alternative for long drives and short flights. There's no reason anyone should fly from O'Hare to MSP with no connections to a different flight, and I'd imagine if the train could get them from Chicago to Saint Paul in half the driving time, there'd be far fewer cars on the road, which is a benefit to both rail (more passengers, more money) and road (less traffic congestion). However, unless there's congressional motivation, nothing will be done anytime soon

What the fuck did Chicago do when it had AT&SF, UP, Pennsy, NYC, Milwaukee, C&NW, Great Northern, Northern Pacific, CB&Q and a fuckton of others all at one time? Cuz it did. I can't even list all of them.

Nationalization worked for US railroads when we had war emergencies, but ultimately the time afterward was a clusterfuck. My beloved Milwaukee was on the rocks immediately after WW2 trying to un-fuck what wartime traffic did to it.
