I used to spend $100 on a beater and run it into the ground
Now I have three bikes all in a constant state of upgrade, a bin full of parts, hundreds in tools, and I baby my bikes. What is going on here

It's called a hobby. Also, it's nice to have nice things. Riding and especially maintaining a nice bike is generally more enjoyable than riding and maintaining a shitter.

Sup guys I’m just an uninitiated guy who’s kinda handy wrenching on cars and I noticed this board is slow with no QTDDTOT so I’ll ask here; i got two bikes that I need to repair. Basically full overhauls on both, I think i can noodle through the design of the bikes myself but what I hate is having to stop a job to go get special tools or parts. What are the absolute must have tools to have on hand? Tips or tricks on tedious parts are welcome too but in general I’m not very intimidated by the complexity of my two bikes. One is my wife’s and it’s a pretty basic new road bike and mines my dads old schwin from 1980 it’s like a hybrid road/sport bike.

that's a heap and would require its own set of tools and things you have to learn, you'd be better off selling it (could probably get up to $50 for it in today's covid market) and getting a modern bike

I'm guessing you're asking specialized bike tools? A chain tool and tire levers are probably the things you're gonna need most commonly. Other than that as far as regular maintenance goes it's all standard tools. If you actually wanna repair that Schwinn though you're likely gonna need more than that, Those cranks specifically are an older type I have no idea how to remove. Head on over to /bqg/.

I don’t wanna sell my dads bike but there is a guy I know who said he’d fix it for like $300 but I’m cheap and competent with tools so I thought I’d see about fixing it myself if the special tools needed weren’t gonna be too expensive. I might just go ahead and pay the guy.

Cool thanks for the insight guys. I’m kinda neck deep in an engine rebuild atm so I’m thinking I need to slow my roll on the projects and just hold this L and pay the repair man.

Idk $300 doesn’t seem like a lot of money to me. I know what you’re saying that like the bike itself doesn’t have that value but I’m not like a collector and I think it’s neat and I am sentimental lol.

Unless your friend was planning replacing a lot of the parts (stupid), it shouldn't cost $300 to make it work again.
If you are sentimental, get a new chain, a new seat, new brake pads, new shifters, and a
brake + Cable kit ($100).
Look up how to re-grease the bearings on your bike, and do that (free).
You will only technically need a set of allen key and snippers, since you could use a hammer and punch to break the chain. But it would be wise to just buy a chain breaker.

I think that's a Schwinn Mesa runner, from 1985. Might be the higher end mirada, but probably not.

It would make for a decent low end commuter .if the fundamentals are good.

Check frame for weak spots, clean up the rust. If the frame is dead, it's time to give it up, turn it into a sculpture.

Check the wheels. You might get by without replacing them, or only doing a bearing replace or repack.

Bottom bracket may need service, or replacement, or nothing. Same with drivetrain.

Ironically enough, quite a few shwinns of that era used weird wheel sizes that have come back into fashion.

it looks like it has a one-piece crank, which is crap compared to 3 and 2 piece cranks, but actually helps you because I don't think you need any special tools to service it.
undo the locknuts with regular wrenches, unscrew the adjustable cup and snake the crank out of the bottom bracket shell. put down a big rag to catch all the bearings. clean everything, put a bunch of fresh grease on everything interior, press bearings back into cups (getting new ones is a good idea even if they look fine) the grease will keep them in place. snake the crank back and thread down the adjustable cup until there's no play but not tight. tightening the locknut moves the adj cup too, so you need to back off the cup a little. getting it smooth with no loose play usually takes a lot of tries.
if the bearing races on the crank or cups are pitted or scratched, you need replacements but getting a modern hollowtech or a square taper crank and sealed bottom bracket will be easier and they're better and cheap. but you do need proprietary tools or pay a shop for installation but should be pretty cheap.

If you're wrenching on cars you already have 90% of tools required to fix the majority of common problems on bikes. Wrenches, allen keys, pliers, basically.
Tire levers can even be substituted for flathead screwdrivers but they're really cheap and worth to have (and since they're plastic you don't risk fucking shit up)
The chain requires a specialized tool that's pretty cheap if you're going to be adjusting/replacing that.
Where you start needing specialized tools is when you have to deal with the drive train. Crank pullers, bottom bracket sockets, sockets for casettes/freewheels. Those usually come in a variety of models for different bikes and if I were you I wouldn't bother with them for that pos bike, but would be a nice investment if you had a non-pos bike that you wanted to keep for a long time and work on it yourself.

It rode pretty good before the chain broke some years ago anyways. Frame is solid for sure. Always kept inside in California so 0 rust. You two got me inspired to make this happen myself tho so thanks for that.

Yeah that’s what I figured too. Bearings and shit need maintenance and I figured I’d do it while it’s half ass apart anyways. For sure I need new break pads for the calipers but the calipers themselves function just fine. My dad had gotten it serviced like 20 years ago and they did new brakes at the time.

Before you go too far, try and figure out if anything needs to be replaced early, to save potential duplication of effort. If the chainrings are shot for example.
