>>1593763I agree for people over 20 years old. But do you intuitively know how to start a fire, hunt wild game, build a shelter in the woods? What about unclog a drain, clean a gutter, change your car's oil? How about file taxes, build a job resume, make connections?
My point is, children learn what they are taught. You will have people who might know or be able to know how to read a map, but since the convenience of gps is there they will use it. When those people have kids, they won't teach their children how to read maps. If those kids don't learn independently why learning how to read maps is important, you can be sure they won't teach their kids it.
And if you can imagine this for map reading, imagine it for almost any crucial skill that is being more and more automated.
I'd agree that its pathetic that some people literally could look at a map and not know what is going on. But its not just their loss, it will slowly be everyone's loss. We need to make our stupid people smart.
