there's ~6 different kinds of bikes there. Yeah there's crossover between them but each kind of bike is for a specialist purpose.
Having 2-3 of each is nice for several reasons
it means you can work on a bike without doing it to the deadline of being able to ride again.
It also means you can loan friends/family bikes and ride with them. I do that pretty often.
A lot of the time too people buy a cheap version of a discipline, get into it, and then upgrade to an expensive one, but they're still fond of their shitter because it got them into it so they keep it around.
It's also not exactly straightfoward to work out what bikes you like or that fit you without trying them first.
another big reason to own shitty bikes is you can take them out at night and leave them locked up and not trip about them being stolen.
I'd take it as a fair point that he has too many bikes instead of having one or two good modern ones which are complete and reliable except as clearly a fixiefaggot and therefor now a gravelunracer he does have basically a very very nice fixie and some very nice gravel bikes so it's not like he's missing out.
