It was by all reports doing it well, but the guy who had it built (for $15k) both didn't train hard enough for the ride and started too late in the season, so he wasn't making enough progress to reach the edge before the last plane out so he had to abandon the attempt. He could have prepared a lot better and could have probably got the bike made cheaper, but good on him for actually fucking trying something that hardcore.
