He is correct that's nothing serious. That just means he had to actually fly the plane himself with his copilot for hours which is tiring/boring but that's about it.

They usually do the take off and landing manually but yeah the actual flight is automatic unless some issues force them to pilot manually.

Flaps stopped working on 777 just after take off so we had to dump fuel and go back to the airport. Didn't even turn on the entertain system for us while we waited.

Well
They do keep an eye on things so you don't bump into other planes, and communicate with various radio stations along the way
They also program the autopilot, but yeah, they don't manually fly during the cruise anymore, though there's still a bit of work left

One of the neatest things was arriving at the Calgary airport when the fog was thick so all the planes were stuck in a holding pattern. Every few minutes I'd see the lights from one of the other planes as a glowing orb passing in the sky.

It did suck that my connecting flight got delayed and I didn't arrive in Edmonton until 3am.

The the police came and escorted him out.

Also had a last minute go-around because of a flock of birds. This came as worrisome to me. My thoughts are that if we had hit the birds we would crash trying to go-around, so why not just land the damn thing???

I was like 12 years old and I looked outside at cruising altitude and we flew by what looked like the top of a tower or some sort of mountainous pillar protruding from the clouds. I know that’s impossible but I also know what I saw.

Was pretty crazy. I was on the side of the plane that could see the fire. Out of the other windows you couldn't see shit so the sudden smoke filled cabin followed by full thrust would have been even more fucking terrifying.

I don't fly much and haven't been through major turbulence, so what happens when people throw up and don't or can't use their airsickness bags? If you're sitting next to them and the flight is full, do you just have to sit next to vomit until you land?

desu i've never seen a convincing case for phones etc interfering with aircraft systems. especially when i've only ever heard of it being speculated as a cause of one accident (Crossair Flight 498, subsequently found to be pilot error.) despite the ubiquity of smartphones.

at best i could see some early models or broken devices putting out enough RF interference to fuck with radio communications.

I carry some kind of knife all the time, usually just a small SAK. Shortly after 9/11, when you couldn't even take fingernail clipper on a plane, I was flying to Puerto Rico from MSY. An older guy on oxygen was coding. A doctor happened to be onboard and was trying to save the guy. There was something mechanically wrong with the man's O2 regulator. Doctor was trying to fix it, but needed a screwdriver.

Nope. DOA.

BTW, as I'm sure a lot of you other wingnuts know, nobody dies on a plane. They die in the jetway upon landing ... wherever.

Was on another flight to Alaska in 89-90 or so. Dude had a massive MI and was DRT.

I only had eXtreme air turbulence once and it was one of the most fun experiences in my life. Free fall is great. All the girls around me woke up and were like "that was so scary :( " and I couldn't stop grinning.
What a funny feeling.
Not strange, but on the same flight, I got to see a beautiful starry sky out the window.

Got diverted on a TWA flight DAY-STL due to tstorm parked on top of STL during the Icahn years. Had to orbit Peoria for several laps, then had to land there because STL was still socked in. TWA was on a cash, spot-market basis for fuel, so captain had to go through dispatch and New York HQ to authorize the charge. I thought at any minute the FO was going to come down the aisle passing the hat.

Not sure why people are surprised by this. Most international flights do it. They just don't announce it over the PA because it's not really important. Just watch the vents after you land and it's really obvious that the cabin is being scrubbed with some kind of aerosol spray.

Had a United flight return back to Dublin because of some kind electrical burning smell coming from back of plane. There was some kind of short circuit or something. Had a go around on an Alaska flight landing in Seattle because of a TCAS alarm and another one on Turkish Airlines while landing in Istanbul. Not sure what the reason for that was the pilot mumbled something unintelligible in broken English. Almost missed my connection because of that
