I’m looking to get a Subaru wrx, most cars I see are being sold with about 140,000 miles and most have a rebuilt engine 40,000 miles ago. Do the engines have problems at 100k or are people just destroying them?

If you are thinking about buying a 140,000 mile wrx then you can't afford a wrx.

Fuck man. I could just buy a base model and put wrx tags on it and these kids would never know. Good way to make a few grand extra.

Blown head gaskets all over the place. The thing eats timing belts as well. Doesn't help that so many people love to blow them up with turbos

They have turbos by default, or at least have for sometime.

Newer ones have timing chains instead of belts, but I think most of the issues come down to >>1596336. They're abused a lot by teenagers and other young men.

Kids abuse them by cranking up the boost, beyond stock, without doing anything else, then splurge by running premium pump gas (for a while). Meanwhile, detonation beats the engine to death until it catastrophically overheats, shatters a piston, or throws a rod. If that's avoided, the rings and cylinder walls are worn or the turbo is in need of a rebuild.

It was only ever the 2.5L that actually had this problem, and that was about 15 years ago. in any case it's easy enough to fix if you can somehow get the engine out (there's a reason why most cars have inline engines)
