Anyone have experience fixing old mopeds who can help me out?
I always wanted a moped and a guy not too far from here is selling pic.
He's pretty sure the engine is fine but it doesnt' start so he assumes there's something wrong with the ignition. Other than that it's just some minor things that need fixing, mostly cosmetics and he has all the parts that's needed to make it run.

I have no experience working on these things and he wants $1200 for it

Not worth 1200. The spark plugs isn't attached to the battery so he's getting no ignition. Also I don't think there's a carburetor on that bike. Don't buy it unless you want a project. In my experience carbs run on hate and desperation and will not run well without an extreme amount of tweaking and time.

I've had fun working on honda trail 90s. They don't go fast but they're extremely lightweight and easy to ride. I'm in california though, and there's tons of motorcycle and mopeds for sale here so the prices are much lower.

My brother and some of my friends had mopeds when we were younger and they're fun to ride, I always wanted one myself.
I think it would be pracical for shorter trips like to and from work, but also nice to just ride around the country during the spring

It would to fun and rewarding to get one working but I'm a bit scared I might get overwhelmed and give up and it just ends up sitting in my garage

The price is really what's holding me back especially considering that it needs fixing.
I can't find any one like this for sale except one for but it's an older model and it's in working order. It's selling for $400 but sadly it's too far away for me to get.

I'm really not sure how rare these really are or how much they're worth but I'm gonna have to see if I can get him to lower the price on it

You might want to replace oldschool contact ignition system with a newer electronic one though.
Contact ignition is a bitch, needs constant adjustments and capaciator or contact replacements.
Electronic ignition just works once it's set up, also usualy provides more electricity for your headlight.
I'm running H4 halogen in my moped for a good reason...

I know I can buy electric ignitions for it online, a bit pricey but avalible. Are they hard to instal?
how much do you recon the bike is worth? 700?

not for 1200, it's missing a lot of parts, important ones too like the carburetor. Once you source and labor all those parts into this bike, do you really want to ride around a bike with a suicide drum brake? I used to have a vintage bike with drums front and rear, trust me, you don't want drums. Around me, you can find a newer working bike for 1200.

That's realy hard to tell, but if it's not running it's usualy not worth more than about 500-600.
Depends a lot on the local market though, Simsons for exampe have a significant price difference between east and west germany.

way too pricey for a non runner, kinda cool but not particularly rare or old enough to justify a full overhaul or restoration if you don't have the parts or knowledge on hand - it could easily cost you way more than it's worth to get it up and running.
old 2 strokes are cool though - just wait for a better one ? for that kind of money you could likely pick up a tatty but serviceable p range vespa - far more practical / durable than a moped but you'd likely need a license.

Imo if you want a project, and it's your first time owning it, get something that does run/work.
Be it a moped, car, bicycle, anything old basically.

anything old like that is going to be enough of a project to keep running.

you need experience to restore something from the dead.

I dunno. Most streets in my old hometown are mph and it was damn near impossible to ride during the day.
Cars wanna drive to damn fast, and I don't feel as nimble riding to the right as I do on a regular bike.
Cagers really do ruin everything.

Dunno where you live, but there is a Honda CT110 for sale on Dallas, TX craigslist for 600$. Legally its considered a motorcycle. I don't have the money to spare rn but if you or any other anon live in the area it might be a good deal
