Do they have to be though. Under the definition that a stagecoach is

Didn't stagecoaches have a better suspension system compared to usual carriages? I believe they used leather straps instead of iron springs.

For a while I've been watching videos from this barryhook2 on yt and it seems quite a chilling activity to drive carriages.
The speeds are low thought, it seems that a horse walks at less than 10km/h and can reach 20/25km/h while cantering but only for few minutes.

Leaf springs aren't that bad, some of older classic cars used them and they were pleasant enough to drive.

The Corvette used leaf springs until the recent rear engine c8. The modern front engine corvettes even used carbon leaf springs in the rear, the springs itself were significantly lighter than coil springs. It was quite a slick system, it's mounted width-wise instead of the traditional length-wise leaf spring configuration and made the cabin "float" on top of the axles.
