First off, you're wrong on the component count. It's three more components.
1. Handlebar shifter - can break if you smash on ground. And don't bs me, people fall on mtbs all the time.
2. Bowdens with cables - attract dirt, rattle, scratch your frame (problem on cheaper bikes only). They have to be cleaned sooner or later, the insides will get filled with dirt and cable will get stiff.
3. Front derailleur - attracks dirt, and is absolute bitch to clean. Has to be tuned from time to time. Won't probably break, but the spring can get stiff and has to be replaced.
This is way more work then one 11sp cassete.
I've been using 3x9 most of my life, I know how to shift.
