Are these a halfway house between a suspension fork & rigid ?

I built a rigid MTB, partly for simplicity, partly for cost/weight, but my wrists are aching. I only ride gravel & roads, no rough terrain or downhill or anything like that.

just learn to unweigh the bars, you're not supposed to hang on them tighter than what is necessary
foam grips are also cheaper and more effective for aching wrists, as is checking your fit on the bike
suspension stems pretty much only serve to save you from the jolt of hitting a small pothole or rock, think something like a bott's dot on the road, that's why they vanished from mtb once coil forks got cheap and you only see them now on some comfort/touring/gravel setups

Depends on what you're trying to absorb. Not meant for MTBs, great for gravel bikes and rigid touring bikes for persistent riding surface rattle.

honestly headshok was the best system yet devised for this purpose. the actual unsprung mass of the system is just the fork & front wheel, combined with the low stiction of roller bearings that is a truly massive advantage in small bump compliance over systems like futureshock/girvin/redshift/hover bar that put the suspension above the head tube

What if we put the suspension right above the wheel? Then it will have as little unsprung weight as possible AND the frame of the bike is actually suspended rather than literally just your wrists, so the suspension can actually absorb changes in terrain

Because roadies can’t possibly imagine riding a fork that isn’t a fast-looking flat colored blade and they’re willing to eat up gimmicky “hand comforting” shocks that do nothing more than extra thick griptape does
It’s basic sprung/unsprung weight, if you want to do a push up for 4 hours while riding cobblestone you’d just want hand suspension, like, you’re still riding a stiff piece of shit rattlecan bike but your handlebar is a little flexier, stem, headtube, grips, bar drop suspension, it’s all the same
but if you want your wheel to be suspended, letting your tires keep more grip while ALSO dampening the impact to your hands, you put the suspension below the frame and above the wheel, where it’s supposed to be

I’m not saying there isn’t a use case for a gimmick like that, obviously roadies aren’t gonna accept 3lbs extra for real scientifically-qualified suspension that actually does something and improves the capability of the bicycle but half a pound for what is essentially a compliant handlebar? Road riders don’t understand that suspension isn’t for comfort anyways, it’s the same reason Walmart sells bikes with cheap pogo sticks, the average idiot thinks comfortable means performance

Yeah that's why the Suntour GVX 40-60mm fork exists. It looks sleeker than the Fox 32 AX so maybe groadies will like it more. Hopefully it'll start showing up on OEM builds. If you're running 42mm+ tires you're probably doing terrain where you'd really benefit from having some travel.

You're a fucking idiot. Extra thick grip tapes provides maybe a millimeter worth of shock absorption. Suspension stems provide up to 40mm, and in a part of the bike where the pedaling movement won't partially disappear into the suspension. If you want shock absorption for your hands without pissing energy away, you have it put it somewhere inbetween the headtube and your hands.

If a shock stem is enough to resolve your problem, so is HTFU. A shock stem won't do jack shit to help your front track properly when you hit the singletrack sections that are features on lots of gravel routes. Gravel is turning into mid-90s XC with tarmac sections.
