Is there such a thing like taller tires for the standard 26inch wheel?
I mean, something bigger that fits in the same rim but is still inside the fork limit

Uhhh there are bigger tires, that's it. No tires work in only one direction, tires inflate in a circle. Tread styles will make at most 1cm-3cm difference (knobby vs slick)

If you want taller you must get bigger

In the ISO sytem your tire size is characterized by two numbers:
>rim diameter in mm
>tire width in mm
Rim diameter must be the same, tire width can be smaller or larger depending on how much space your fork and frame allow.
Tire width is also tire height, meaning the outside diameter gets larger as the tire width gets larger.
Your bike most likely has 50x559 mm tires.

There are two different inch based systems and several different and incompatible 26" sizes.
These systems are a mess and make no sense whatsoever.

I see.
The main idea is to get larger and softer tires on my hardtail to make my commute comfier. Or is this a mistake?

Not at all, that's reasonable.
But keep in mind that low pressure is what makes a tire soft, not its width.
And the best pressure for you is not the maximum pressure printed on the sidewall.

The exact tire size is somewhere on the sidewall of your tire, in your case it's most likely 50x559 or something like that.
Check if your bike has the clearance to fit wider tires before buying wider tires.
Your average hardtail for example can't fit crazy wide tires like 100 mm.
The standard seems to be about 50-70 mm.

If you're mostly commuting on roads and sidewalks and maybe the occasional hardpack dirt trail you'll want slick tires first of all, then look for whatever width suits you. On 26" (559mm) I'd recommend slicks that are at least 26x1.50 or higher. The best all rounder size IMO is 26x2.00, they are very comfortable and corner super good and they run fine at 40-ish PSI. I've been running the standard version of Serfas Drifters in 26x2.00 and they've been great considering they're so cheap compared to other tires like schwalbe marathons. I've put 1,5000 miles on the same pair, 90% of the time on roads and feel no need to upgrade.

You say you're commuting, I'd recommend scwalbe almotion if you've got money, or scwalbe green guard if you dont.

Do you mean 650b? If so that was a think in MTB but now its all 29.
It took popularity in road (for some reason) when disc breaks became big. People could put 35mm 650b wheels in their 25mm 700c frames and have a comfier bike/offroad option.

Also 650b conversions have been a thing on old road bikes for awhile, just get some long reach calipers and you can usually fit REAL big tires, like 40+.

I mean, if I wanted to buy a bike at the Decathlon website, for instance, there is only one model of 26" bike and a lot of 27.5" and 29".
And everyone around here seems to be getting 29" now.

By the way, Im about to get a cheap 27,5" one, secondhand, so the need for taller 26" is over now. But still wonder if I've done well since I appreciate the lightness and manageability of a 26. Ive never tried anything bigger before.
