Industry insider here... cooking to clue you in on what is coming.
In sure you've noticed that all need disc bikes are switching to flat mount. There's a reason for that.
The bosses have realized that disc is dead in the water and consumers are getting fed-up with the lack of progress on the technology. They know they've frustrated you but can't admit that the shift was a mistake.. so...
The classic move: a new tech, a new standard. Modern drum brakes designed to attach to flat mount disc frames.
The industry needs to keep selling and they know a return to rim would kill sales, so drum brake tech is being modernized and refined.
They will require almost zero maintenance. There will be hydraulic (lol) options. No more bent discs or pad issues. It is plug-and-play with very little maintenance.
The resistance now will be the bike shops, who make their money selling you costly repairs. Drum brakes are almost immortal and will kill sales.
Anyways, Don't shoot the messenger. It's coming soon.
It might sound ridiculous but from what I've heard it's actually going well and production will start in the next few years or sooner. They will be marketed as "disc, but maintenance free" "all weather" with "minimal" performance loss re stopping distance and weight.
Ready to see full carbon drum braking bikes in the TdF?
Then my colleagues expect more gearboxes to hit the market. Carbon belts are the future here.
Anyways, hold off on buying any post mount disc frames unless you like eating money on dead standards. ttyl
