However they are only efficient at near 100% power output, realy expensive and ridiculously inefficient at low power.
Their main advantage is a better power/weight ratio, but in case of locomotives that's not even realy an advantage.
A locomotive needs to be heavy to have sufficient traction, so you end up mounting additional weights to it.
In the end diesel engines tend to be more economical for that application.
