Driver will get a passenger emergency audio and visual alarm. The fault screen will show the location. He'll have to stop the train and make an emergency call to network control. Once the train is going under 5km/h the door can be opened. If you then jump out you'll be hit by another train.

it would be rare for them to stop the train between stations, they usually assess the situation and have emergency services meet up with the train at the next platform.

It's common nowadays for the passenger side breaks to only apply when a carriage is at a platform.
This is because stopping in a tunnel can be more dangerous than continuing to the next station in for example a fire. In most cases actually, it's better to go to the next station than have it hardwired to the brakes.

The only place you can't stop when a PE is pulled is a tunnel, bridge or steep sided cutting. Otherwise you're supposed to stop immediately and make an emergency radio call. At least that's how it's supposed to go here.

This is different to the PEI button that lets a passenger talk to the RTC.

It doesn't influence the brakes at all in Australia. The driver will get an alarm, make an emergency call and choose the closest safe place to stop.
