Why are these things so expensive?

What's a good basic one to get? I don't care about social networking features, I just want to load on my own routes.

" just use your smartphone " - I buy into the notion that these GPS units are still worthwhile - waterproof, long battery life, and have all the map/route data on them when you're off grid. It's kind of like a smartphone backup in this sense.
