really old road bikes have much in common with BSO
and 12 speed bikes kind of mix and match parts anyway so it might work
only problem is getting the chain or sprocket too close to the drop out

but it might also be age and grime has dried it out, get some oil inside of the freewheel
I found and old Shimano Z012-6 Freewheel that hardly moved at all - after being submerged in oil for three days it spins just fine
