They're going to NEED local food sources in case there's ever a disruptive crisis or, more likely, conflict with a hostile power with a better navy. You know, so they don't fucking starve in case of an emergency? Rice farming is, as far as I know, pretty efficient in terms of calories-per-acre, so they'll want to keep the rice terraces actually. Obviously it doesn't cover all nutrients, but that's manageable.
