Listen lads, a decent ebike, and i mean a proper decent ebike what was designed to be an ebike from the off, not a bog standard shitty halfords tier bike with a conversion kit bolted on, a proper decent ebike is going to set you back about 2 grand, and i spent a few weeks searching through them so I know, most of them are pretty shit, for a good one with decent specs, quality frame and components and all that you really should be looking to spend about 3 grand +. BUT.... If you buy a very good frame and wheels, because what a lot of these tossers don't factor in is the torque and extra forces these bikes are subjected to, so if you buy a good frame with good forks, none of these cheap fake shock absorbers that weigh a ton and sap your energy, proper rigid forks, good hydraulic disk brakes, you can skimp on the gears, you need some decent quality but you don't need 21 fucking cogs, 6 is more than enough when you have 500w of mid drive power backing you up, a nice comfy saddle etc etc, if you get all that ordered and sent to this little place in devon, they'll build the whole thing for you and put the motor, battery, controller etc in too, all professionally done to high standards etc and the entire thing is going to cost you less than 2 and a half grand, and believe me it's going to shit all over anything they try to flog you on the internet. It'll be lighter, stronger, better at stopping, more efficient, more economical and cheaper and you my son will be a fucking winner for once in your sodding life. take the custom ebike pill lads and make the halfords jew seethe in despair Me? I'm putting a 500w mid drive bafang bastard on picrel and there's fuck all you can do about it.

that's a lot of words to say "i'm too lazy to pedal my own bike"

>>1615256 I do, I drive a land rover (2007) and an alfa romeo (1992), I also cycle (pedal only) but the truth is ebikes are fantastic fun for the money, relatively cheap and perfect for short solo trips where walking isn't an option and driving is just stupid where time may be an issue.
You can fight it all you like but you're going to lose anon, the ebike is taking over, just be sure to do it right when you finally succumb

>>1615258 regular bikes are fun too, will always be cheaper, and are just as perfect for short solo trips
corporations want you fat and lazy and there's no better way to do that than removing the effort from cycling. just wait til they legalize throttle ebikes and we're well on our way to highway capable mobility scooters

>>1615246 That sounds very cool. Not sure how I feel about a single speed ebike. if you have motor issues you're stuck riding 50lbs in 70 gear inches

>>1615315 If the motor fails or the battery dies I'm calling the wife to jump in the the land rover and come retrieve us. Having said that you make a fair point, but honestly these bafang motors are pretty well engineered, there really isn't much that can go wrong with them, and the lowside's a goddam tank of a bike, with the motor running there'll be no work for the bike to do except stop, and that's why I'm spending £150+ on a complete braking system overhaul, more cogs = more potential points of failure

about bikes, yes im thinking about 500w fw reducted hub motor and PAS only, no suspension to cut weight but fatty tires 2.4'

Does it need special tires and suspension. This is the same hybrid that I got that I was planning on putting a motor on.

Tires look a bit old in the pic but at low power I'd call ebike-specific tires a meme unless you want them for the extreme puncture resistance some of them offer. Does seem like it should fit ones a good bit fatter so I don't think you'll be really needing suspension.
I think you shouldn't bother unless you live in the hills or have a long commute, though. That's a plenty capable and zippy bike on its own.

>>1615258 I live in a place where there is a 100% chance of steep hills anywhere you go. Sure you can spin a road bike up those hills, and as a kid I rode/pushed my bike anyway. The ebike adds a whole new realm of exploration and it has been the most fun I’ve had riding a bike in decades since I made my own diy ebike in 2019. Direct drive hub motors are silent, and if you pedal along, which I enjoy and always do, very stealthy. I used the bike I hadn’t ridden in 10 years and owned since new... a 2004 Specialized P2 dirt jumper. Put a 1500W Aliexpress kit on it. Goes 60 km/h but most fun at normal bike speeds. Being a DJ it is like riding a 26” BMX around the city... very fun. Go ahead and make fun of it but I don’t care... had way too much fun with this thing in the last two years.

>>1615405 For slower speeds with 250-500W, no. For high power direct drive hub motor or a mid-drive like a Bafang Ultra with 1500W, you need a very strong frame with suspension (DH bike or beefy hard tail) and four piston hydraulic brakes. Even still, just build it if that is what you have and keep on the lookout for something more suitable. The bike you already have is the best bike to convert.

U are right though it's a good area for hobbyists to play in. Much like 3D printers. 10 years ago you would have thought they'd be widespread but at the end of the day it's, like I said, a novelty for most people who have one.

You're a retard if you ever spend more than $150 on a frame to build an ebike with. You can get indestructible clunker chromoly bikes on offerup for dirt cheap. Pair that with a 1000-1500w DD motor kit and 48/52v 20ah and you have a 50-60+ mile pure electric range ebike that you payed $850-1,000 for that outclasses all the $4,000 e-toys made of tinfoil.

Seeing as how they've been around for almost 30 years now I can't really say it's a trend. Also they were initially conceived with casual riders in mind.
$1000 isn't unreasonable for a decent bike from a reputable brand. The people who feel they need it would somehow be able to budget for it.
