So uh, kit motors. I'm considering buying one for my mountain bike, and I wanted to ask if anyone has any experience with them, anything I should look out for etc etc.

Think of this before researching any further:

Are you comfortable with having an exposed noisy and dirty motor between your legs? If that's no problem, then continue to investigate.

I would just save for a real motorbike or ebike, and stick to a regular bicycle meanwhile.

A kit motor makes the bike heavy, pedaling on it sucks, I guarantee.

When are you snobby cunts going to realise that when casuals say 'mountainbike' they generally just mean default casual bike for casual things, not a bike for serious trail riding. In which case a 'decent' version is not that expensive.

It won't, there's still plenty of resistance. You can find freewheel sprockets but they're "toggle able" by removing and inserting pegs that lock the sprocket to the wheel.

Also what you say about range is true but you are going to be doing plenty of repairs on the bike before you get it right or more likely trash it and move on to the next BSO like most gas kit people do.

I'm not a hillbilly, I wouldn't be thrashing it. I'd just use it as a legit way of getting around. They're also somewhat common in my country, so I know they must be easy enough to setup. And about buying a motorcycle, I can't afford the insurance if it as I'm unemployed. Since I already have a bike I can put the kit in, might as well.

Hillbillies take great care of their toys, why the classism? And it's not a matter of thrashing it around. Bicycles aren't meant for the vibrations from these engines and a cheap one like they're most compatible with is practically a disposable item doing this. But whatever, if you really want to do it anon these kits are generally good quality for recycled pig iron, just remember steel is real and if it vibrates at idle it's going to break.

A bit of rubber between the bike and the frame will go a long way towards keeping the vibrations down, but I'd actually reccomend you look into a 4 stroke kit instead of the standard 2 stroke china girl if you want to commute. They vibrate a lot less and the most maintanence you really have to do is change the oil and clean the air filter, you'll need to install a wide crank though and have plenty of room for a motor.

I'll look into the dimensions of the 4 stroke to see if I can fit it. I was already going to put some foam/rubber between the mount points and the engine but still. Why the wide crank? Do they lack a lot of power?

the 4 stroke kits are definitely worthwhile, i put one on a goodwill bso and it has been holding up great with just oil changes for probably ~1500 miles over the last 2 years, starts on the first pull errytime
get a rear wheel that has a disc brake mount for the sprocket, the rag joints are shit and annihilate spokes

I turned an old 26" mtb into an ubereats machine with a 1200w DD hub kit and 20ah battery. Have almost 2000 miles on the kit and it's been great. Direct drive ebike motors are built like tanks and are simple and should basically last forever if you're just riding it around like a moped. I'm not familiar with singlespeeds but if the cog works like a regular freewheel then you can just thread it onto a hub motor to save yourself from having to coldset the frame to accommodate the 6-7 speed freewheel that comes with most kits. Also with anything over 250w you want a steel frame, and don't forget to install torque arms.

They're not worth it, first off they stand out more than a high power ebike so cops will be more likely to fine you.
The tiny chink engines are unreliable as fuck, especially the 2 strokes, they're so poorly made that people have bought two identical ones before and the displacement vary significantly between the two. Even if the engine ends up being reliable and you're lucky, you're still putting a lot of vibration, load, and strain on a bike frame not meant to handle it
