I'd like to buy something used but its hard to buy used wheels online when you can't easily assess damage to a wheel - trueness, bearing wear and of course spoke condition

I'm not against the crow's foot spoke lacing - I do not want radial lacing because i believe it is a meme and I want the option of using disc brakes (although I will likely use a rim brake).

Blind buying anything used is always a gamble, literally Russian roullette with 3 bullets in the chamber. When we're talking about something that may have taken the kind of punishment a front wheel can be subjected to then you can probably pop another round in the cylinder.

Of course when it arrives you might get a nice 'click', but honestly of all the things to buy second hand without seeing them I'd place bike wheels very close to the top of ABSOLUTELY NO FUCKING WAY!

This is the point, and $180 isn't even cheap. Why did the original owner sell it? Sure, it may have been stripped from a stolen bike that was a couple of weeks old, but more likely the previous owner decided he wanted (or needed) to get a new one.

Without seeing even a couple of pics you're taking such a leap of faith here, if you were a mate of mine I'd say without hesitation 'don't do it'.

Ah, OK, I misunderstood. Well then the only questions you need to ask yourself are...

Bearing in mind the Chink origins either could be true, but if it's a genuine bona fide Mavic and not reject stock you have a deal there, still a gamble but not as bad as buying used. Even if it's chink imitation it should at least function as a wheel, albeit a cheapo one.

Also if there's a fair returns policy then maybe I'd go for it.

I suspect the wheel would be legitimate rim and tyre, chinese bladed spokes and machine built wheel - all of which is totally acceptable IMO.

I can check the wheel construction when i get around to building the rear wheel for the bike and have all the tools out.

I just want to see if anybody had any red flags to raise in terms of the wheel, seller, etc

You can't use different kinds of brakes with the same wheel (or frame). That wheel's for disc, and your frame is old so probably made for rim.

Also the spoke pattern on a rim brake front wheel doesn't matter at all because all the braking happens at the rim with practically zero rotational force transfered via the spokes. The spokes on the back have to transfer the force of your pedaling to the rim.

if you read exactly my wording in the OP what I said was I would like the option of using disc brakes, which seems to be my only option with this wheel if I cannot run rim brakes on it.

I have never owned a bike with disc brakes so I don't know much about them. They seem to have come in fashion rather recently. I'm happy to make adjustments to mount hardware on my frame/fork since that seems to be inevitable when you build a bike and dont want to dip into your life savings for it.

Is it really the case that there is no flat on the rims of this wheel to bear on with rim brake pads?

If that's your budget why not go all in and get a pair, you'll save in the long run because there's always a discount when buying more of something, plus they'll match and if you buy direct from the manufacturer you'll know for certain they are legit.

A good pair of wheelsets costs at 1000 bucks and more, that's the reality.
